Scarsdale High School's Science Research program is a three-year course designed to help students explore in depth a topic of interest in psychology, math, biological science, chemical science, or physical science.
During sophomore year, students conduct background research about their topic, which they chose over the previous summer. Students often begin by reading popular science articles and then transition to journal articles written by experts in the field as they gain a deeper understanding of their topic. Starting in the winter and spring, students begin reaching out to prospective mentors in their fields who will guide them in their research projects. Working with their mentors, students develop a research plan for the upcoming summer, whether it be starting their own research project or assisting their mentor in an aspect of a larger project. The summer after sophomore year, students typically conduct 4-6 weeks of research with their mentors.
In junior year, students continue working to gain a more thorough understanding of their research topic by reading journal articles. Juniors with completed research can enter competitions such as the Westchester Science and Engineering Fair (WESEF) and the Junior Science and Humanities Symposia (JSHS). Throughout the year, students communicate with their mentors to develop an idea and plan for an independent research project. During the summer after junior year, students conduct 6-8 weeks of research and begin writing a paper based on their research.
Seniors have already completed their research and work on finalizing papers and presentations to enter various competitions for their completed research, including Regeneron STS, WESEF, and JSHS. Students may elect to submit their research papers for publication in journals. In addition, seniors serve as mentors for sophomores to guide them in the research process.
