Beginnings

Week 1: Welcome Back!

Wednesday

Note: Advisory activities are generally scheduled for Tuesdays and Wednesdays (and there's no advisory on Fridays). This week is a bit different because of our abbreviated schedule.

Students are generally full of excitement to start off the school year. Some of your students probably had experiences over the summer that they are more than eager to share. If you have a boisterous group, go with it! Let the advisory be a free-form sharing of their summer adventures. If you have a group that is a bit more timid, here are some activities that you can consider doing with them.

Introductions: Maybe you have new students in your advisory, maybe you are new to the advisory. Take some time for everyone to introduce themselves then leave some time to talk about the norms they created as freshmen. Do any of them need updating or clarification?

Nuts and Bolts: There are always TONS of logistical questions that students have at the beginning of the year.  You likely know more than they do about schedules, the school calendar, computers, guidance counselors, locker combinations, etc. Be the all-knowing sage.

Thursday: Predictions!!

Check In: How was their first day yesterday? Is their class schedule correct? Feel free to review the email that Meg Hughart sent out about changes they can make to their schedules.

Activity: This is my all time favorite activity. Have your students write out predictions for the year. What do they think will happen in the school/politics/their favorite TV show/with other students in advisory? These should be lighthearted! They can write as many as they want. Have them write their names on their papers and gather them up. Store them somewhere safe (NO PEEKING) and pass back at the end of the year for a read-aloud. They will likely need a few days to do this, so you can consider giving them until next Tuesday to complete them.

Fun: Create or find some sort of repository to house your predictions until June. Decorate it if you want. The Math Department uses a popsicle stick tiny house that former teacher Jill Kellogg left us.

Week 2: Class Meeting and Activity Fair

Tuesday

On Friday, September 3rd there will be an Activity fair happening. Please look through the plentiful list of clubs with your students (hover over Clubs + Activities → SBHS Student Activities to view, then scroll).  Have your students explore the descriptions of the clubs as a group or on their own. They can navigate to this club page by going to the SBHS homepage, then clicking on Student, then going to the Athletics page. Have them share out 2-3 of the clubs that they are interested in finding out about more on Friday at the fair. Additionally they can brainstorm clubs that they would like to lead and make a plan to talk to Steph Hyatt about their ideas. After, if there is time, please explain how the Activity Block will work. If you would like to reference any of Pat Burke's description, here is a link to what he shared with us.

Wednesday

On Wednesday, Sophomores will have a virtual class meeting. Information for the topics included in the meeting can be found here. The meeting was prerecorded and is viewable below.
