Winter Carnival Review
Please take the time to talk about your advisory's experience at Winter Wellness Carnival. If you feel so moved, try using the Rose, Bud, Thorn format.
All students and staff should fill out the Winter Wellness Carnival feedback form - even if they did not attend. You can do so by scanning the QR code to the right or clicking here.
Wolf Den clean-up day - please have students/staff recycle all cardboard using the bin outside cafe 2 (literally outside - use the exit between the cafe and the weight room). Make sure folks take any reusable supplies home as well.
If time allows, check out this fun comedy video to share a few laughs. Here's a follow up video if your group enjoyed that and you still have time.
Don't forget about our daily and weekly features (linked below).
To honor Black History Month during our final advisory meeting in February...
OPTION 1: Please listen to the song Strange Fruit, performed by Billie Holiday. Please share the text below with your advisory prior to listening to the song. Display the lyrics (or print them/hand them out) so your advisees can follow along while listening. Click here for lyrics.
In 1939, Billie Holiday’s adaptation of Abel Meeropol’s poem, “Strange Fruit”, described the horrors of Jim Crow-era lynching. (Please read/listen to this short article on Abel Meeropol). Holiday's rendition is widely considered the first influential jazz protest song. Her performance of the song often shocked audiences from their complacency, with some becoming very uncomfortable. Holiday faced threats, fear and resistance on a daily basis, but she did not stop performing it. Holiday’s label refused to record or distribute “Strange Fruit”, fearing backlash and the alienation of white listeners, which would lose them revenue and reputation. In response, Holiday recorded the song with Commodore Records, during a four-hour session in April 1939 (see this page for more).
Looking for more jazz? Listen to the album Lady in Satin by Billie Holiday, which is considered by many to be one of the best jazz albums of all time. Here is an article about the album.
OPTION 2 (from Monica Desrochers): The 2024 theme for Black History Month is ‘African Americans and the Arts’.
Have students check out this online art gallery that features Black artists. Have them pick out an image that speaks to them and share it with someone sitting next to them.
Here is a Spotify Black History Month playlist that features both old and new artists. Play this while students are reviewing the online art gallery.
