These meetings will show students how to request transcripts, letters of recommendation and complete the Common App recommender form correctly. Students should head down to Guidance and sign up for a spot. There is one during A-block 9/8 and during advisory 9/12 with many more opportunities to come.
SBHS Open House: Thurs, Sept 14 @ 7 PM. Please encourage folks from home to attend.
Jr/Sr Privileges forms should be turned in to the Attendance Office ASAP (even if you filled one out last year).
Getting the Band Back Together, Wrap Up
(from last Wednesday): Have students share their summer memory with the associated picture , video, or object if you haven't done so already.
Predictions: Have your students write out predictions for the year. What do they think will happen in the school/politics/their favorite TV show/with other students in advisory? These should be lighthearted! They can write as many as they want. Have them write their names on their papers and gather them up. Store them somewhere safe (NO PEEKING) and pass back at the end of the year for a read-aloud.
Try this fun activity with your group: Sticky Note Sentences.

College Essay Prep
We begin our college essay writing workshops next week. Please share this article to prime the pump.
Have students read the article and then lead a discussion about obstacles students have encountered or anticipate encountering while writing their essay. Follow up by asking what idea(s) in the article will help them overcome those obstacles.
Make sure that students know they don't need to have a rough draft for next week, as the series of workshops will take them through the entire process. If they have a completed essay, going through the process should help them refine their work.
Energizer: Quick Numbers (if time allows)

College Essay Writing
Postponed to (hopefully) next week: Do you have advisees who aren't planning to attend college next year? Please send them to Cafe 2 for a presentation on resume building hosted by our very own Julian Barritt.
An overview of our process can be found here.
Please watch The Power of Words video with your group from the College Essay writing page of our website.
Please share this file with students: Tips for Writing a College Essay.
Have students complete the "Getting Started" activity. Students should make a copy of this file and save it to their Drive in their college essay writing folder (which they may need to create). Give them the rest of the advisory block to write. Please print copies ahead of time to hand out to any students who prefer pencil & paper to keyboard & screen. They could then do their writing on the back of the paper.
Please ask students to bring in any work they have done on their college essays for advisory next week, as we are planning a read/feedback session.

Students will need to work in pairs for this activity.
Please print out a copy of the activity The Writer & The Babbler for each of your pairs (not front to back) ahead of time. All the directions for the activity are contained in the file.
Please facilitate this activity for the group so that everyone is proceeding through the activity at the same time. The directions for the activity can be found on the file linked above.
For those students who attended the resume building workshop on Tuesday: please share this document with them in order to support their efforts around resume writing and/or a similar activity.

At this point in time, students should have either a clear idea for their essay, or a written rough draft.
For those advisees with a clear idea and no rough draft, please allow them time to write.
For those advisees with a rough draft, please set up a conference schedule with you.
Here is the process to be used for conferencing with advisees about their essay.
If you have a lot of conference requests, you may want to consider having students pair up to give each other feedback using the same process linked above.
The idea is that the reader/feedback giver should be asking questions. Questioning allows the writer to think for themselves.
