Option II and Additional Opportunities

COLLEGE EXPERIENCE
Students may need to take the Accuplacer test to be placed in college level math and ELA courses. The Accuplacer test is waived to those students who achieved certain scores on SAT, ACT, or AP tests. See application (linked below) for detailed information.
Parents/students assume the responsibility for all costs associated with the College Experience. This includes full tuition for each course, and any applicable campus fees. Parents are responsible for the safety, insurance, and conduct of the student while traveling off campus (between school, the college/university/and home.
The process for registering for college courses has changed. To begin the process, please visit Bergen Community College to create an account. Ms. Lucy Mistretta at BCC will review your application and let you know the next steps. Ms. Mistretta is able to be reached at the college experience email above, or by calling 201-447-7100 Extension 5346.
Students must supply their counselor and Option II coordinator with their student transcript showing the grade earned in the course. Once grades are posted, the students are responsible for submitting their grades to their school counselor by January 1st each year (fall courses) and June 1st (spring courses) respectively.
https://www.njtransfer.org/ will show you which credits are transferable. The colleges, though, have the final say in choosing to accept transfer credits.
As a reminder, a three-credit college course is equivalent to 5 SBHS credits. All college courses will be weighted as Honors level courses. The colleges require a minimum GPA of 3.0 to register for College Experience.

DUAL ENROLLMENT
If you are participating in a BCC Dual Enrollment Program class at SBHS, you must enroll to receive the college credits. Details on how to complete this enrollment can be found here: BCCC Dual Enrollment application.
Parents/students assume the responsibility for all costs associated with Dual Enrollment. This includes full tuition for each course, and any applicable campus fees. Tuition for the Dual Enrollment is 50% of the current credit rate (In January of 2021, this is equal to $73.25 per credit), plus a $15.20 registration fee. Free and/or reduced lunch students qualify for a tuition waiver.

WORK BASED LEARNING
WBLs are structured, supervised learning experiences to enable our students to explore career possibilities, clarify career goals, practice life skills, and build a resume. Parents/students assume the responsibility of transportation involved with WBLs. The required paperwork must be completed which will be given to the students when they meet with the Work Based Learning Coordinator. Students participating in WBLs are mandated to complete a portfolio in Google Classroom consisting of, but not limited to: monthly time sheets, reflections, and a final project. It is understood that the Option II Coordinator will periodically visit the student at the site of the WBL. It is not permitted to complete a WBL at a place where a family member is the owner.
Students may leave the building for a maximum of two (2) periods per day. Students must work a minimum of 10 hours each week at their WBL. Students receive 2.5 credits for each period of WBL per semester. Students will be provided with a grade of pass/fail for Work Based Learning.
TEACHER MENTORSHIP:
In order to qualify for a Teacher Mentorship placement students must be registered for the Tomorrow’s Teacher DE Course of Study. The student and mentor teacher must have an initial meeting to review the expectations and determine the responsibilities of the role. Once these are established, a Teaching Mentorship contract must be signed by the student, his/her parent or guardian, and the assigned teacher. Students need to choose a minimum of three teachers in order to ensure schedule compatibility.
All students participating in Teacher Mentorship will be provided with a grade of pass/fail for the field experience. Tomorrow's Teacher DE Course is a graded course.
ALTERNATIVE PE:
High School juniors and seniors who participate in a Saddle Brook High School varsity sport or club/competition/elite level sport not offered at Saddle Brook High School may opt out of attending Physical Education classes senior year. The Varsity coach and Supervisor of Athletics will be responsible for ensuring the student remains on the team as an active participant. All students are required to attend Health class. If a student athlete participates in three Varsity sports, they may opt to complete the Health requirement via Educere with the understanding that the parent is responsible for the fees associated with Educere. Students who participate in Alternative PE are responsible for submitting a digital log documenting their 150 hours of health/physical activity/safety to the Option II Coordinator to receive credits. Click here to access the log. Students must change the name of the document to last name, first name, PE LOG, and drop it into their assigned Google folder. Students who submit completed logs each week will earn a grade of an A (95%) for that marking period. One late submission will earn a grade of an A- (90%). After that, a pass/fail grade will be given. Failure to submit four (4) or more logs will result in a failing grade.
Students who participate in competition or elite level programs such as Gymnastics, Ice Skating, Martial Arts, etc. may qualify for Option II. Documentation from the program must be provided and will be reviewed by the Option II Coordinator, Guidance Counselors, and Supervisor of Athletics.
ONLINE COURSES:
Educere online courses: The grade received from the online course will appear on the student's transcript.
