Assessments & Grading

Advanced Placement Courses

The Advanced Placement (AP) program offers students an opportunity to pursue advanced college-level courses that may earn students college credit. Some participating colleges grant credit hours and/or advanced college placement to students who obtain high scores on the AP examinations. Advanced Placement courses are intended for students who demonstrate excellent aptitude, skills, interest, and superior work ethic within a given subject/discipline. Students taking AP courses are expected to prepare for success on the corresponding AP exams administered by The College Board. Students will be reimbursed for the cost/partial cost of exams for scores of 3 or better. Students must take the relevant course’s Advanced Placement Exam in May to earn Advanced Placement weighted GPA credits; otherwise, the course will count as Honors credit only.

New Jersey State Seal of Biliteracy

The New Jersey State Seal of Biliteracy is an award given by the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) in recognition of students who have studied and attained proficiency in at least one language in addition to English by high school graduation. The NJDOE, pursuant to P.L. 2015, c. 303 enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey, established the State Seal of Biliteracy program in 2016 to help students recognize the value and the tangible benefits of bilingualism. Since its inception, a total 39,008 Seals of Biliteracy have been awarded. This designation on a student’s high school diploma also provides employers and universities with a method of identifying bilingual candidates and those who have prioritized the study of other languages and cultures. Moreover, the State Seal of Biliteracy emphasizes the importance of both bilingualism, which facilitates improved communication and boosts the local economy, and cultural understanding, which promotes social acceptance

Students who are eligible for a Seal of Biliteracy will receive a certificate with the Seal noting their name and language(s) of attainment from the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE). In addition, school districts may wish to include the insignia "New Jersey State Seal of Biliteracy" and the language(s) for which the Seal was earned on student transcripts through their student data management systems (e.g. Genesis). Including a notation on student transcripts for a Seal of Biliteracy is at the discretion of the local district.

Assessments are given in January for Juniors and Seniors.  For more information: https://www.nj.gov/education/standards/worldlang/Docs/Students_Families_SealOfBiliteracy.pdf

Standardized Testing

Students must take and demonstrate proficiency in grade 11 on the New Jersey Graduation Proficiency Assessment, which includes content aligned to the grade 10 New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS) in ELA, and the NJSLS in Algebra 1 and Geometry. If after completing the New Jersey Graduation Proficiency Assessment a student does not demonstrate proficiency on the ELA or mathematics section, the student may retake the New Jersey Graduation Proficiency Assessment in the following summer or fall.

A student with disabilities whose IEP states that they are not eligible for the alternate assessment (Dynamic Learning Maps) must take the New Jersey Graduation Proficiency Assessment in grade 11.ELA

Advanced Placement (AP) examinations are administered in May according to The College Board schedule.

The PSAT/NMSQT (National Merit Scholar Qualifying Test) is offered once a year in October. Saddle Brook High School, in our continued efforts to improve our students’ college and career readiness, administers the PSAT to all sophomores and juniors. The PSAT/NMSQT is a non-college-reported test score used as a practice test. Top students may qualify for National Merit Scholarships, a prestigious and well respected recognition when applying to colleges. While open to all grade levels, all sophomores are advised to take the PSAT.
