For the past five years, our student senate has found a way to bring the phrase “You’re never too old to go trick or treating!” to another level. During the days in which trick or treating is scheduled, our student senate members dust off their favorite Halloween costumes and bring out the wagons to go around various neighborhoods and collect cans and non-perishable food items. This year, we collected cans from neighborhoods from all six sending towns, totaling more than 2,500 non-perishable food items that were distributed right back into our community. This year, we focused on donating to End 68 Hours of Hunger, a program that is directed by our school nurses. We even encouraged our neighboring private school, Phillips Exeter Academy, to start up the program as well. The nurses put together backpacks for the weekend with non-perishable foods that make easy access to snacks for those kids that receive free meals at school. The 68 hours account for the time from the school lunch they receive on Friday until the breakfast they get on Monday morning.
