The spring and fall cleanups that we run each year are our main source of fundraising for our Senate. During the fall we typically hold around four to six cleanups where students go to houses around the community and do any yard or handy work that needs to be done; this process repeats itself in the spring! We do this without a set price for our service and then accept any donations that the family would like to make to our senate. Cleanups count as an outside event, which is required in order for a student to acquire honorary membership status.
EHS students have obtained experience with many different things through these cleanups. It can range from painting a shed, planting flowers, cleaning the pool, moving wood, building fences, mowing the lawn, weeding garden beds, cleaning horse barns, raking leaves, washing the cars, cleaning the garage, moving furniture in the house around, to helping demo a kitchen, and much more! Students who go to these cleanups learn all sorts of things, but also make long-lasting connections with the families.
These cleanups really allow us to make a mark on the community; we have families who still ask us to come to their houses to do cleanups. The original student from EHS who started this fundraiser graduated years ago and her family has us come back every year. They really enjoy having current students come back and help them out. Last fall we helped them demo their kitchen and move furniture to the basement in preparation for a house remodel. Every year this family enjoys meeting new faces and seeing us grow up. They always comment on how wonderful it is to spend time with us and that they cannot wait to have us back next year! This is how we keep our reputation with all our families. The families that we do cleanups for being so kind, consistent in their participation in the fundraiser, and very generous; we appreciate working with them and their contribution to our senate. It makes so many things possible for us like travel costs and money starting up new initiatives.
