I am excited to go on trips that contain art and theater. I really am looking forward to going on the graffiti art tour because I love Banksy and would love to see the different types of street art. I am a little fearful of going through the airport without my family because this is the first time I would be traveling without them. I am also scared to go through the whole ordeal with my two passports. Hope all goes well!
When we arrived in Melbourne, it was five in the morning. I was so discombobulated in the airport, and it took so long to get our luggage! When I first saw the city, I loved the cold air and the architecture was amazing! Here are some photos that I took while we were walking.
However, I knew that when we went to the Lume, I would almost fall asleep. However, I took notes so I wouldn't fall asleep. This is what I observed when I was there. I thought that the atmosphere was pretty cool, and how they used projectors to display the art was fascinating. Here are some images.
While we were there, I got a little bored so I decided to sketch a little and this is what showed up.
Today when we arrived at 5 in the morning, I was very tired. I thought it was a bad idea to go see the LUME because all of us would fall asleep, and I was right. While it was interesting art, I wouldn't go to it again. However, something interesting was the anti-vaccine protest and a passive-aggressive magician who were both doing a horrible job getting people to watch them. Afterward, we were able to wander around Burke street, and we found a toddler's dress that was over $400! Other than that, I am looking forward to tomorrow with the street art tour!
When waiting for our street art tour to start, there was a church that was going all out with its bells. It was very fun to just listen to the chaotic sound of the bells and how the series of noises had no pattern. Here is the church to the right.
When walking around the streets of Melbourne, observing the different types of street art— I took notes, again. I thought everything that the tour guide was saying was fairly interesting along with the experiences that they had. My notes are to the left.
Our tour guide brought us around to so many different sights of street art that littered the streets in such a beautiful way. To the right, there are a series of different photos I took on our tour that I loved looking at. I hope you enjoy them too!
I found it so interesting about the stories that each artist puts behind their work and how their style portrays that message. I also loved how you could tell the difference in skill and how each artist knew that their work would be covered eventually— making their art more precious.
During our workshop, we created stencils that we sprayed onto a sheet of plywood. I have had a very deep learning experience about how spray paint and stencils are very hard types of meduims to work with. However, I would love to work with it again. To the left is what I made during the workshop.
Today was the street art tour! I LOVED it! I found it so interesting the in and outs of the community and how it worked. I loved learning about the unspoken rules around street art and how different artists had different types of morals that show through their art. I also thought it was fascinating making the stencils for our graffiti pieces was cool, however, I am not happy with what I made. I think that the experienced artists were right about how street art takes practice and time to get your art to where you want it to be and to find your style. Afterward, we went to a fair— where I bought a tub of cotton candy! Hope to have to good day tomorrow!
When we were walking throughout the city, our tour guide was pointing out some amazing architecture around Melbourne. Here are some of them.
During our photography class, he asked us to take photos off of prompts, and here is what I came up with.
Afterward, during free time, Natalie and I walked for 19 minutes to get bubble tea, but it was worth it. The containers were so cute! We also found udon around that area that was only $8! But to make up for our cheap dinner we spent some money at the arcade playing claw games.
Today's activities were very boring today in my opinion. This was because we went kayaking; which was very tiring. We also did a photography class, I felt like I didn't need to learn about it because what the person taught was something that I already knew. I think that instead we should have had something that would have made us wander the city by doing challenges that involved taking photos. However, while today was boring for the activities, when our sponsors gave us free time after, Natalie and I wandered around the city and had a lot of fun. We got bubble tea, and udon, and finally went to an arcade and lost $15 between the two of us. Overall, I think the school thing we did today was boring, but I got to learn more about the city.
When first heard about this trip, I was so excited to go to this exhibit due to how I love fashion and enjoy making clothes. I remember when I walked into the first couple of rooms I literally got chills because his designs were so awe-inspiring. I think that what made him such a different designer compared to everyone else was his headpieces but also his ideas. He had such out-of-the-box thinking that an average person would not even think to put on a model. The ticket is on the bottom.
When I got there, I took a few design ideas down because I couldn't believe how inspiring his designs were. I also had a few favorite designs of his that definitely make people/me stop and think about what it is. Here are the items of clothing and accessories I loved the most.
For today's activities, we went to the theaters for a background stage/logistics tour and a puppet workshop. I also had dinner with Ms. Lucy! I thought that the workshop was pretty interesting because I have never learned about puppetry before. However the tour of the theaters was okay, but I was disappointed because I thought that we would be able to see the set and the 'real' professional backstage. After that, we went to the Alexander McQueen exhibit! It had eight beautiful rooms filled with different designs that he created. I loved it so much because I am really interested in making clothes. I think this experience will especially stick with me due to how I remember when I walked into each room my breath caught and I got chills. Finally, my dinner with Ms. Lucy was AMAZING and it was great to see her again. She also was so kind and bought be Koko Black— which of course I was so happy about because it has my name.
This is the map of Healesville. Originally, I was going to walk around with a big group, but then Jerry and I decided to split up so we could cover more stuff. The boxed areas on the map were the animals we most definitely wanted to see.
When walking around the park, we noticed that there were a lot of birds. I found the parrots to be especially amazing and took a video of them singing.
There were a lot of different animals we saw. Below:
In the evening, we had a hotpot to share, and I found a Yi Fang. Yi Fang is a specialty fruit tea shop that serves the best tea in my opinion. I haven't had one for three years, due to the chain not being here in Singapore.
When walking back from the place we ate our food, we were able to see the sunset from a bridge. The lighting was very pretty and the sunset was phenomenal!
Today we went to Healesville, ironically Kalyana was there too! However, we just missed each other, as I went in the morning and she went in the afternoon. The animal that I loved the most that I saw there was the platypuses. While it was very hard to get photos, I couldn't believe that I was seeing one for the first time! I also enjoyed watching the birds and the bird show, because I learned a lot of things that I didn't know. After coming back from Healesville, we went to a chocolate shop, however, I still think Koko Black is superior. Finally, Natalie and I went to an anime store called Minotaur, which was AMAZING. We had hot pot for dinner and found a Yi Fang! I introduced it to everyone there, and now Natalie is hooked on it! I can't wait to brag to my sister about being able to get a drink there. In the evening there was an intense game of UNO, and I went to the gym. My dad will be so proud!
Unfortunately, it is not allowed to take photos of the production, so this is the ticket that I needed to get into the theater.
For today's activities, we went to Victoria market for two hours. While we were there I bought some fruit and some candy. I felt like the two hours there were a little excessive, however, we had a fun time eating lunch at an Italian cafe. Afterward, we went to two museums where we just dragged around chairs to sit at different art works while a guy talked about them. I think the only problem with this, was that this was day 6 for us, and all of us were tired from the trip. At one point, he made us try to recreate a painting, which was weird but fun. Finally, we saw Mary Poppins, which was really good. I think that some of the songs were really repetitive in their musicality, however, their set production was AMAZING. I couldn't believe the amount of effort that the set crew and design must have put into it. I also loved the ensemble work of the cast and how the musical was pieced together so perfectly.
This is what I created in the workshop with the little time I had. We were given the prompt to create a costume that aligns with a character from the Selfish Giant by Oscar Wilde. I chose to create a costume for the flower that tried to pop out of the snow. I wanted it to be a dance piece that ended in the flower poofing down to fall asleep, making her dress an upside down flower silhouette.
While the talk the lady gave made me fall asleep, the view from the museum was so pretty! Here it is to the left.
While the movie was kinda boring, I loved seeing the Royal Gardens! I think that if I lived in Melbourne, that would be the perfect place to hang out and draw. I think that the idea of a Moonlight Cinema was awesome, just the movie wasn't to my taste. I think this because before the movie started, we saw a bunch of bats flying through the air, and it was so pretty! Here is the ticket we got for the movie.
Today we had two different workshops Improv and Costume Design. I was in the costume design one, where the lady lectured us the whole time and barely gave us time to create. Afterward, we went to a museum where another lady spoke for thirty minutes about artist freedom. I fell asleep during that. I thought that the idea and the concept of the museum were interesting and a great thing. I think this because it was a different side of the art world that we aren't acknowledged every day. Next, we went to the Moonlight Cinema to watch Avatar 2. I think that the CGI was AMAZING and that the art they used along with the graphics was so good. However, the plot line could use a little work. I think that it was definitely an hour and a half too long.
After taking a couple of days to think about the trip, overall, I think that my trip was very fun but some of the time could have been used better. I learned a lot about myself and how I interact with people along with where my interests lie. I really liked the graffiti day and when we went to the Alexander McQueen exhibit. I also enjoyed the musical and different art aspects of different activities. I think that I made good relationships with others on this trip, and stepped out of my comfort zone. It was a great experience which I had fun, and I loved the city of Melbourne!
