The BIG 5 (+1)
Love kids...and make sure they know it! (Welcoming/Connecting)
Maintain a classroom environment (physical and social/emotional) that is conducive to teaching and learning.
Make sure teachers and students are clear on lesson objectives. (Clarity of Purpose)
Provide students with ample opportunities to think deeply and to share their thinking (more student talking and “heavy lifting”, less teacher talking and “heavy lifting”).
Students are actively engaged in and understanding the lessons. (Check for Understanding)
Collaborate with your colleagues and contribute to a positive school culture
SOME BIG IDEAS FOR TEACHING READING
Text selection is key!
Teach the reader, not the book
Notice and name the strategies and actions students are us
Connect Interactive Read Aloud, Shared Reading, and Guided Reading objectives when appropriate
Do Balanced Literacy, including small group literacy, every day
Provide ample time for Independent Reading every day
Have students use Lexia CORE5 for 60 min/week

SOME GUIDED READING BEST PRACTICES
Identify groups, based on student levels. Use a chart, like this to map your students levels.
Identify reading behaviors and strategies to focus on during group; use Fountas and Pinnell Continuum book
Identify effective texts for these particular reading behaviors and levels
Provide effective guided reading instruction: brief opening (ex: prompt students to get ready to read...they should preview the text, look at pictures, read blurb, etc.)
Monitor student reading behaviors, by taking notes
Provide effective independent activities (independent reading, Reading Plus/Imagine Learning, independent writing)
Rotations should be about 20 minutes each
