Prime Factorization
A prime number can only be divided by 1 or itself, so it cannot be factored any further. Every other whole number (composites) can be broken down into prime number factors. It's like the Prime Numbers are the basic building blocks of all numbers.
You can use the prime factorization of a number to quickly find the GCF and LCM of two or more numbers.
Greatest Common Factor (GCF)
A common use of the GCF is to simplify a fraction by dividing both the numerator (number on top) and denominator (number on bottom) by the GCF of both.
Least Common Multiple (LCM)
When adding or comparing fractions, you may need to find a common denominator (the number on the bottom should be the same for both fractions). You can find the lowest common denominator by finding the LCM of the denominators of the fractions to be added or compared.
