In AEP, students develop movement knowledge, skills, and understandings through a wide array of experiences in dance instruction including improvisation, technical skills, choreography, observation and analysis. Based in the standards, these lessons are process-driven, rather than product ("performance")-driven.
Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten explore movement concepts (e.g. time, space, non/locomotor movements) and contrasts (e.g. strong/light, fast/slow, high/low) through improvisation and engaging dance games.
Grades One, Two and Three explore cultural movement and discuss the similarities and difference between the dances and what that implies about the perspectives, values, and experiences of each group.
Grades Four and Five use choreographic devices, various inspirational sources, and the dance elements to adapt a group dance and is performed in front of their peers.
Middle School explore a variety of percussive styles of dance from body percussion to hip-hop, incorporating various rhythms, styles and coordination of movement patterns.
Each lesson is designed to stand alone but build on the topics taught previously. All materials, including a Google Slides classroom presentation, are embedded and included. At schools with 18 lessons, each lesson will be presented twice, with modifications and extension activities allowing for further and deeper content exploration.
