Apply for a job in AEP
Join our Team!
Whether you're launching a new career in teaching, exploring a second career in education, or making an encore in the classroom after retirement, AEP is a great program for teachers and learners to Transform Lives Through the Arts!
What is the Arts Education Project?
In AEP, Visiting Teachers are scheduled in teams to deliver rotations of dance, music, theatre and visual arts lessons to elementary students throughout the district.
Every five weeks, AEP Visiting Teachers receive a day of paid training in a set of pre-written arts lessons for elementary students. Teachers may be trained in one or more arts disciplines of their choice. During the next five weeks, AEP Visiting Teachers teach this set of lessons at schools around the district while the classroom teachers have professional learning. Lessons are 45-50 minutes long and include a slide deck. All materials, including a laptop computer, are provided. See sample lessons below!
Schedules are flexible and AEP Visiting Teachers may pick up regular substitute assignments on days they are not teaching for AEP. Pay is $275 daily. Please email vapa@sandi.net with questions.
How Do I Apply?
Currently, AEP is only hiring current SDUSD employees. If you are currently employed as a Visiting Teacher in San Diego Unified School District, you can apply via this internal application.
Non-SDUSD employees who wish to apply for the AEP program must first complete the process to become a visiting teacher. Currently the visiting teacher application is closed and it is unclear when it will reopen.
In the meantime, you may consider completing the following steps to fast-track the process.
Applicants must have a valid 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit (or other California teaching credential). Do not apply to the position if you do not yet have your credential - it will be screened out. Apply for and obtain your credential first (see below).
What Do I Need For a 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit?
Collect or complete these requirements:
Have a bachelor’s degree or higher.
Meet the basic skills requirement (WAIVED FOR INITIAL APPLICATIONS FROM 1/1/23-7/1/24). Most often, this is completion of the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST). As of 2021, the CTC now accepts proof of meeting the basic skills requirement through submitting transcripts of eligible university coursework:
Individuals may meet the requirement by providing official transcripts... The transcripts must show passage of courses in reading, writing, and mathematics as outlined below. Courses must have been taken at a regionally-accredited college or university for credit, passed with a grade of B or better, be degree applicable, and be at least 3 semester units (or equivalent quarter units).
For reading proficiency: a course in critical thinking, literature, philosophy, reading, rhetoric, or textual analysis.
For writing proficiency: a course in composition, English, rhetoric, written communication, or writing.
For mathematics proficiency: a course in algebra, geometry, mathematics, quantitative reasoning, or statistics.
Have a CTC fingerprinted background check.
How Do I Obtain a 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit?
We recommend that you apply for the 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit through the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE). Please submit a complete packet of materials to the San Diego County Office of Education's (SDCOE) Credential Services office by mail or drop-off (Room 104): 6401 Linda Vista Rd., San Diego, CA 92111. Processing time is approximately 2 to 3 weeks. For more information, visit their Substitute Teaching Permit webpage.
A complete packet includes:
Official Transcripts Showing the Bachelor's Degree or Higher. Transcripts must be from a regionally accredited college or university and must have your degree posted. Electronic transcripts must be sent directly from your university to our office to sdcred@sdcoe.net. If your university does not offer electronic transcripts, you may have them send hard copies to: SDCOE, 6401 Linda Vista Road, Credentials Room 104, San Diego, CA 92111.
Proof of Basic Skills Requirement. Submit your score report (see the test options in the CTC's Basic Skills Requirement leaflet). If you choose to use coursework, send official transcripts for all classes as well as the CTC's CL-130 form; if you attended a teacher preparation program, your university must send in a 41-BSR form.
Live Scan Fingerprinting. Submit an online request for a fingerprinting appointment at the San Diego County Office of Education. Bring with you two copies of the completed 41-LS form (for the state of California), and if desired, the Clearinghouse Fingerprint form (good for most San Diego school districts, so you don't have to be printed for each district).
Completed Temporary County Certificate (TCC) form. Complete and submit the Temporary County Certificate Form. Omit your social security number; SDCOE will contact you via phone to ask for your social security number. (A social security number is a required field for the CTC application, but for security purposes, do not send it on any electronic forms.)
