Topic: Rhythm
Objective: I can play and create rhythm patterns from notation.
Vocabulary: rhythm, notation, “pear” (one sound on a beat), “apple” (two sounds on a beat), “shh”/rest (one beat of silence)
Extensions:
Demonstrate rhythm-reading using the play-along video Spaced Out from class - or have the students research and select a YouTube video play-along that uses the rhythms they learned.
Create rhythm patterns by identifying a one-syllable word and a two-syllable word, then linking four of them into a sequence. Now speak and clap it! Example: apple, pear, apple, pear.
Topic: Mirroring
Objective: I can use my body as an actor in a theatre exercise
Vocabulary: mirroring
Extensions:
Ask students to demonstrate partnered mirroring to you. You shouldn't be able to tell who is leading or who is following. Encourage students to add locomotor (travelling) movement to the mirroring, using more space. Mirroring activates empathy in the human brain. Finally, have students stand in a circle and select one person to lead the action. Everyone else follows, but shouldn't stare at the leader. Encourage students to use their peripheral vision and other clues to follow the action. Call out a name to change leaders, encouraging students to keep the motion fluid.
Try a "flocking" exercise. This is Flock Dance. Actors stand in a group/clump. A leader who is at the front point of the group starts moving slowly in a stylized walk or movement. It could be just swaying or bending up and down. All the other actors mirror the movement. If the group's direction changes/turns, whoever is currently at the front of the group becomes the leader. (Sometimes it's easier to start this work in a triangle shape.) Keep playing until several actors have had the chance to lead. Try this playing some gentle, instrumental music. After actors understand the exercise try it again with suggestions to influence the movement (angular, and old woman, red, etc.)
