Practice echo (songs, clapping etc.). We sang "Down By the Bay" and "My Aunt Came Back" in our lesson.
Review the book “Jump, Frog, Jump” by Robert Kalan, which we used in this lesson. This is call and response form - the question is the call, and the response is "jump, frog, jump." Have students say the response.
Topic: Communication: Posture and Gesture
Objective: I can use my body to show how I feel and tell a story.
Vocabulary: gesture, posture
Extensions:
Play the Emotions Card Game. Using cards with different facial expressions, students take turns selecting a card and identifying the emotion. They then show the card to the rest of the class and they all mimic the emotion with a facial expression and gesture. Encourage students to share stories about a time they felt this emotion. Finally, in pairs have students improvise a short scene in which of the actors feels the emotion and the other actor reacts to the emotion.
Play this video in which students can "Guess the Gesture". As the images appear have students mimic what they see in each slide. Ask them how that gesture makes their body feel. Does is bring up an emotion for them? After the video, have students create short pantomime scenes where they only communicate through gestures.
