Explore practical guidance for discovering, evaluating, and integrating Open Educational Resources into teaching and learning.
When selecting an educational resource, consider the following criteria:
Relevance
Does the resource align with your course objectives, subject area, and intended learning outcomes?
Accuracy and Quality
Is the content accurate, credible, current, and appropriate for the intended audience?
Accessibility
Can users access the resource easily? Are alternative formats, captions, transcripts, or other accessibility features available where needed?
Usability
Is the material clearly organized and suitable for the intended teaching or learning activity?
License and Permissions
Are the reuse, adaptation, and redistribution permissions clearly stated?
Source Credibility
Is the creator or publishing organization identifiable and reasonably trustworthy?
Identify a teaching or learning need.
Select resources that align with your course learning outcomes.
Review the resource's quality, relevance, accessibility, and license.
Determine how the resource will support lectures, discussions, assignments, or independent learning.
Provide students with clear instructions and appropriate attribution.
Review the resource periodically to ensure that its content and links remain relevant.
Openly licensed resources can support learning activities within the Canvas Learning Management System.
Depending on the resource's format and license, instructors may:
Add links to external educational resources in Canvas Modules.
Upload permitted documents or other learning materials.
Embed videos or interactive materials where technically supported.
Incorporate readings and resources into assignment instructions.
Develop learning activities based on permitted adaptations of OER.
Before uploading or modifying any material, verify the applicable license and follow the university's requirements for accessibility, academic integrity, privacy, and instructional design.
When adapting an openly licensed resource:
Confirm that the license permits adaptation.
Download or access the original material from a legitimate source.
Make the changes needed for your teaching context.
Clearly identify the original creator and source.
Indicate what changes were made.
Apply any required license to the adapted material.
If the license prohibits derivatives, do not distribute an adapted version under that license.
