Doc.: "Active Learning Institute" Workshop - Spring 2025
SU Strategic Objective:
2.B.3— Implement Flexible and Inclusive Learning Environments.
Objective (long-term):
Advance active learning practices.
CETL will conduct the Active Learning Institute (ALI) as the intensive program since the participants is limited to 2-3 lecturers each semester. This program as the response to the growing and need for more engaging and student-centered teaching approaches. The ALI is open to all SU faculty members interested in increasing active learning in their courses. The ALI consists of four phases:
Active Learning Workshop: This phase consists of a one-day interactive workshop facilitated by the Head of CETL and selected ALI fellows (faculty members who have prior experience in active learning or are certified ALI graduates). Participants will discuss best practices, analyze classroom case studies, and begin planning their own integration of active learning into one or more upcoming class sessions.
Active Learning Observation: This phase focuses on modeling and peer observation. Participants are invited to observe a live or recorded classroom session that successfully applies active learning strategies. This stage helps bridge the gap between theory and practice by showing active learning in real instructional settings.
Active Learning Implementation: This is the core phase of the program, where participants apply what they have learned directly in their own classrooms.
ALI Reflective Essay Writing: After implementation, participants complete a structured reflective journal. This is a written account of their experience throughout the ALI program.
Participants who successfully complete all four phases (Workshop, Observation, Implementation, and Reflection) will receive a formal ALI Certificate from CETL. They may also be invited to share their experiences in future ALI events as peer mentors or fellows.
