Why must I use SCOIR?
SKPS is a SCOIR school district.
The Common Application is how you APPLY to colleges.
SCOIR is how DOCUMENTS leave our SKPS system for you: transcript, counselor letter, teacher letters, school profile, etc.
YOU MUST SYNC THESE SYSTEMS if applying to 4-year colleges!
Please see Mrs. Conolly for help with SCOIR and the Common Application.
Important! ALL the following steps need to be done at least 2-3 weeks before a college application deadline(s). You MUST give staff time to write and add a letter for you into the SCOIR system.
Common App General Set up
Create a Common App account. Use your personal email, legal name, etc.
Add McNary High School information under “Education Tab “.
Add at least one college under the “My Colleges” section.
Click on the down arrow next to the college and select “Recommenders & FERPA Release”.
Complete the FERPA authorization release. You only need to do this for one college. It will automatically do it for all other colleges once you do it once. It's recommended to select “I waive my right to review all recommendations….” It’s up to the teacher to decide if they want to send you a courtesy copy for outside scholarships.
Complete the “General” tab nested under each college on the Common App. Choose an application date. This allows counselors to see what documents they need to submit on your behalf & it CREATES A DEADLINE internally at the high school for documents.
SCOIR General Set up
Login to your SCOIR account. An invitation was sent to your school email. Can’t find it? Look in your CLEVER account on your Chromebook browser window in the College and Career Readiness FOLDER.
Once you set up a password for SCOIR you will be prompted to fill out the FERPA release and waiver - yes, do this for SCOIR too.
In SCOIR, go to “Visit Profile” settings under the initial for your name in the top right corner.
On your PROFILE page there is a blue “Connect Common App” button. Connect.
It will prompt you to login to your Common App account. Do so.
Letters of Recommendation Steps in the Common Application
In your Common App account, click on a college(s) you added and look at the “ College information”. Scroll down to application requirements and read what they require.
Under “ FERPA & Recommendations” for each college, see if the college is requiring any “teacher evaluations” or counselor evaluations. Look at the requirements for each college you have added - each college is different.
This is also where you can see if they allow community recommenders. If the recommender does NOT have a school district email address, you must invite them to upload a letter for you inside the Common Application (only).
Login to your SCOIR account.
Teacher Letters of Recommendation in SCOIR
Key Concept!!!! The Common App & SCOIR will NEVER assume where you want your teacher letters to go. You must ASSIGN your teachers to your colleges in SCOIR - BEFORE you hit APPLY to your colleges in the Common Application, or teacher documents will not attach.
In your SCOIR account, click the “My Colleges” tab.
Click the blue words, “Rec & Docs”, near the top.
If you have a teacher or teachers who have agreed to give you an LOR, click “New Request” and send them a link so they may upload their letter.
Only to ask for GENERAL letters of recommendation, not college specific letters.
Do this for every teacher you have asked and who is writing a letter.
Remember you MUST send your counselor a brag sheet aka data sheet.
