Homework

In third grade we will be using Kidblog.org as our assignment book. Each Sunday the assignments will be posted for the Monday through Thursday night requirements. There will be no assignments for the weekends unless you choose to work on a long-term project. Most projects will be assigned at least a week before they are due, giving plenty of time during the week to finish.

Salem has adopted the guide of using ten minutes of homework for each grade level, meaning that third graders should have no more than 30 minutes of homework a night. (If your child ends up having more than that on a consistent basis, please let me know so we can work together to solve the problem.)

TODAY A READER, TOMORROW A LEADER! Research shows that the most effective home assignments are reading requirements, so reading will be assigned every day. The memory and spelling words will be included assignments each day on the homework page and a final test will be given on Fridays. Until they are memorized, a digital math facts practice will also be required. There will be penmanship, writing, math, social studies and science assignments when necessary. Even with no homework assignments over the weekend, our hope is that reading will become such a habit for your entire family that you will include it in your weekend plans. If you have any questions, please let us know.

We are also going to require that two books are with your child each day–even at home. The idea is that when one is finished, the next book is ready to go. Guide your child to read only one of the books at a time. Also, when the first book is finished it should be replaced the with a new one as soon a possible. This is a VERY tough concept at first.

If any requirements for the week are not met, a Notice of Unfinished Assignment note will be sent home for a parent signature and returned the next day. That way the parent knows that an assignment is late or missing.
