The Inclusive Education Department at Claremont is guided by three sets of core beliefs described in the Principles of Learning, the Principles of Inclusive Schools, and the First Peoples Principles of Learning. Through these principles we acknowledge and support the diverse range of abilities that our students bring with them.
Through a range of services we work together with students, their families and the professionals in our schools and community to provide high quality learning opportunities for all students. The Inclusive Education Department provides for the development of the "fully enabled learner"; one who feels a sense of belonging, competence, and self-determination.
Our Claremont Inclusive Education team is comprised of highly competent and caring professionals that work to support students on their individual learning journeys. Our team includes:
Administrators
Inclusion Support Teachers (IST)
School Counsellors
Youth and Family Counsellor (YFC)
Indigenous Support Teachers
ELL Educators
Educational Assistants
Students who have been identified through the School District as having special education needs are assigned an Inclusion Support Teacher (IST) as a case manager who serves as a liaison among the student, teachers, home and community. The case manager, in consultation with the student’s team, develops an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) for the student each year. The IEP outlines specific goals and appropriate adaptations or modifications to the student’s educational program to ensure that the student’s needs are being met. Inclusion Support Teachers also assist with transitions, support curriculum adjustments, coordinate access to District services and liaise with outside agencies.

Students with an ongoing need for extra support to complete academic classes and upgrade basic academic skills may be offered a Support Block in their timetable. Support Block offers supervised, focused learning time with teacher or EA check-ins and support. Placement is by referral through the Inclusive Education Department. Regular attendance is required. Expectations are that students attend daily, use their time productively, and self-advocate when assistance is needed.
The School Completion Certificate is intended to celebrate successful learning that is not recognized in a Certificate of Graduation (the Dogwood Diploma). It is offered in order to recognize the accomplishments of students with diverse needs. Claremont's Evergreen Program is based on the 5-A’s: Access – Achievement – Autonomy – Amity - Actualization.
Our specialized Life Skills and Community Access program is based on a philosophy of inclusion. Our focus is a purposeful approach to transition to adult life. Working closely with families, district personnel, and community service providers, we develop an individualized program that includes:
Participation in meaningful classes
Individualized life skills development
Physical Health
Work Exploration
Making progress towards IEP goals
Transition Planning
