This course introduces students to the exciting world of Drama and Performance. Drama is a way of sharing and understanding traditions, perspectives, cultures. Identity is explored, expressed, and impacted through drama experiences. Drama invites students to be imaginative, creative and involved. Drama students work on improvisations, role-playing, character and scene work, mime, speech, movement, and theatre games in order to build skills in observation, listening, coordination, teamwork, cooperation and increase student’s confidence. No experience is required. All you need is a positive attitude and a willingness to try. By the end of the course students will have developed skills for the stage and for life. Drama class is fun!
Drama encourages creativity, innovation, and collaboration in a variety of contexts. This course is designed to educate the Drama student in a variety of contexts of the art form - improvisation, scripted drama, film projects and role work focusing on characterization, voice and movement are covered through class activities, exercises and performance work. An emphasis on script work is to be expected. This class has no public performance. No experience is required.
This year-long (8 credits) class is intended for motivated students who have a passion for Drama/Acting and want to study it intensively. Or for students who want to be immersed in the subject and perform in a publicly-performed play! Drama offers dynamic ways of exploring our identity and sense of belonging. Preparing a theatre production requires active engagement, resilience, and commitment. Students will work in-depth on theatre skills, performance skills, theatre history, playwriting and directing. Acting for Film is also covered in this course. The class will produce a full-length production which will be presented in the evenings in either the Fall or Spring. 4 credits are earned for the Drama level of the student and 4 additional credits are earned as part of the Company curriculum
This course is designed to offer the Drama student a chance to develop a well-rounded understanding of theatre by experiencing the art form focusing on script development and directing. Traditions, perspectives, worldviews, and stories can be shared through script writing and directing. Practical experience of theories discussed will enable students to "test their work" with an audience. If not enough students enroll in this course, an independent study can be arranged through the teacher.
Musical Theatre is being offered inside the timetable, no longer after school.
Want to be in a musical? Take this fun and exciting course! Explore, design, and create musical theatre collaboratively, using imagination, observation, and inquiry. Musical Theatre teaches acting, singing, dancing and the experience of what is required to be a part of a production. A full-length musical is developed during this course and is performed in May at the Ridge Playhouse. In addition to classes, students are required for some rehearsals and performances that will occur outside the regular school day hours. All students are accepted into Musical Theatre, no matter what kind of experience you may or may not have. Auditions are held to determine roles in the musical.
Musical Theatre will also include those musicians who wish to be a part of the Orchestra. Students will learn advanced technique and accompanying skills required to be a part of a musical production. Musicians must be proficient on their instrument.
Lights, sound, sets, costumes! Stagecraft is a hands-on fine arts course which delves into the many facets of creating theatre productions. This class encompasses design (lighting, sound, props, costume, set), audience services (front of house, marketing) and production (stage management, board operators).
Theatre production cultivates creativity and collaboration by encouraging innovative solutions to the unique challenges that we face in producing theatre. We will take a look at how we can enhance the aesthetic experiences of the audience through movement, sound, imagery and language. Students have the incredible opportunity to be a part of the production team for one of the shows we produce annually at the Ridge Playhouse.
