MATERIAL: At each session, students will be presented with ONE passage taken from ONE of the 10 course readings. There are all together 10 course readings to be covered and studied in this course. Each reading will be presented only once.
TASK: Students will work in their team to answer correctly 5 to 6 reading comprehension MC question based on that passage in 25 minutes per GTL session. 1 point is awarded to each correct answer.
LEADERS: To distribute responsibility, at each team, there is one student taking turn to be assigned as LEADER. Leaders’ list will be announced at the beginning of each GTL session. The day’s Leaders will be responsible for leading their team through the session and upload their team’s answers to the Course Moodle toward the end of the GTL session.
Also, Leaders will be responsible for indicating their team’s answer to each question via Zoom’s Polling at the Feedback time.
FEEDBACK & EXPLANATION: At the end of each GTL session, there will be a 15 minutes’ Feedback and Explanation time. The number of correct answers will be tallied for each team. Students are to be prepared to explain your team’s answer.
EXPERIMENTAL AND CONTROL GROUPS: The two sections of this course (01E and 03-05E) will be randomly assigned to either the experimental group or the control group by lottery.
-Experimental Group: will be administered the Gamification of Teaching and Learning Activity in class.
-Control Group: will be administered the Group-Based Teaching and Learning Activity in class.
GAMIFICATION OF TEACHING AND LEARNING ACTIVITY (EXPERIMENTAL GROUP): The gamification elements will include 5 features: (a) a Leaderboard (recognition, feedback on performance) to keep tract of teams’ progress at the end of every session, (b) badges (recognition) to be given at 10 points, 20 points, 30 points, 40 points, and 50 points to recognize students’ effort, (c) bonus opportunities (reduction of frustration) for earning extra points to tighten the competition; (d) tangible gold, silver, and bronze prizes of elegant stationeries to be awarded to teams that have earned the highest points; and (e) team competition (fostering social processing, reducing cognitive processing) to foster social processes, teamwork and cooperation, and distributed cognition.
GROUP-BASED TEACHING AND LEARNING ACTIVITY (CONTROL GROUP): The group-based teaching and learning activity will include the same procedures and materials as the experimental group—all EXCEPT the gamification elements.
-Nonetheless, the control-group students will be given the opportunity to be rewarded with the same quality and quantity of tangible elegant stationeries BY LOTTERY at the end of the course.
