Before reading the novel, students work through questions about Afghanistan, life under Taliban rule and important vocabulary that will come up when reading the novel. This will be completed before we start reading the novel so students have some background knowledge and context that will be described throughout the novel.

Now that we have listened to the first 5 chapters of the novel, students will complete the first section of their Breadwinner journal. They will be given feedback on their annotating, as the first section will be a formative and not for marks . Moving forward, they will complete section 2 (chapter 6-10) and section 3 (chapter 11-15) which they receive a mark.
A lot of you have done a lot of summarizing in the notes. Remember that annotating is meant to be a place where you share your thoughts, feelings, questions you might have, predictions and connections you make to the story. It is not meant to be the place to take notes about the events of the story. That is why you complete the summary at the end of the chapter.
When looking at the STEALs, a lot of you are capturing great quotes from the story but the quotes are meant to gather evidence that will eventually support the creation of an opinion/literary essay where you will say that a character from the novel has X traits and use events and examples in the story to support you claim- think about our work on 9/11 and Welles.
Finally, the chapter summaries have been completed but you are not providing enough details for the visualizations. This is meant to deepen your understanding of the novel. The art itself isn’t important but rather what you see and describing what you see. When you are making connections it needs to connect to your own life and ensure that questions posed are fully answered.
Overall, the first 5 chapters were well done but their is some work to be done to ensure each section is properly completed. Take a look at your rubric and especially at the comment I have shared. You are not being “assessed” although I did show you what you would get on each section. Chapters 6-15 will be assessed for marks so make sure that you make some changes, additions to the sections moving forward.
