This week we are going to start looking at Indigenous perspectives. We kicked off our that look by discussing the importance and value of participating in a sharing circle. We will be incorporating this in our everyday learning. We will start each day with circle and also start incorporating a talking stick during class and group discussions.
This week, we are taking a pause from our character traits unit to recognize all those that have been impacted by residential schools. We have spent the week having important discussions around the experiences of those that attended residential schools and the impact it has had on Indigenous Canadians.
We are starting each day this week with a Zoom assembly and activities.
We watched and discussed a "promotional video" that discussed all the positives of residential schools and the kids critically analyzed what they think the message was behind the video. They then watched a contrasting video that described the experience of those that attended residential schools.
After those discussions and watching our videos, hearing stories from survivors, student decorated their own orange shirt to show their support and solidarity with survivors.
Today we spent some time recognizing and discussing the importance of land acknowledgements. We went outside and brainstormed ideas to create our own land use acknowledgements using Canva or Google Slides.
Although we aren't done looking at Indigenous perspectives yet, in your journal reflect on what we learned the last couple weeks about Indigenous practices, residential schools.
