"The Rookie" is a pretty interesting and exciting police show that mixes a lot of action with deep character moments. At the center of it all is Nathan Fillion, who does a really good job portraying John Nolan, the oldest rookie in the LAPD. Nolan’s story about becoming a cop at age 40 gives a different look on law enforcement, showing themes like never giving up, starting over, and chasing a new life after facing tough times.
The show first aired on October 16, 2018, and it introduces us to John Nolan, who’s recently divorced and from Pennsylvania. He makes the brave choice to start a whole new career in law enforcement. His age and background make him stand out from the younger officers like Officer Angela Lopez, Lucy Chen, and Tim Bradford. Nolan’s interactions with these characters and his mentor, Sergeant Wade Grey, add more layers and make the show more interesting.
Throughout the series, Nolan faces a lot of challenges both at work and in his personal life. He's trying to get better at his job in a sometimes dangerous environment, while dealing with his divorce and trying to reconnect with his son Henry, which adds more drama to the story.
The series is currently in its eighth season, which started in early January 2026. It’s releasing weekly, and the last episode will be aired in May 2026. You can stream the series on ABC, Hulu and Disney +, Frndly TV, Fubo TV, Sling TV, Philo, and YouTube. This season primarily focuses on Nolan and the team handling complex cases from conspiracies to drug busts. There’s also an international mission that will test their skills. The storyline makes the show engaging, blending action with character relationships.
The following content below includes spoilers that reveal plot twists.
The show features a really cool cast of characters that enhance the story. By season 8, Lucy Chen, one of Nolan’s original rookie friends, has now been promoted to Sergeant and does undercover work. Tim Bradford, who was Lucy’s tough Training Officer, is now a Watch Commander. Angela Lopez moved up to Detective; Nyla Harper, who took a demotion from being an undercover agent to a training officer to keep her family in season 2, is now working as a detective once again. Wade Grey is now working with the FBI as a senior liaison, responsible for overseeing operations. Wesley Evers was a defense lawyer, then became an Assistant District Attorney.
The show continues to introduce new rookies as a part of the cast. Jackson West was one of the first rookies from early seasons, he was one of the first to die in the show. Aaron Thorsen joined in Season 4 and is a notable rookie because he was falsely accused of murder, and the other officers didn't think he’d make it in the LAPD. Celina Juarez was introduced in Season 5 as Nolan’s first rookie trainee, and Miles Penn is the newest rookie, trained by Tim Bradford. Overall, the introduction of the rookies helps evolve the story and keep it engaging.
Overall, "The Rookie" offers a great mix of action and emotional moments. Fillion’s portrayal of John Nolan adds to its appeal. It’s definitely worth watching if you enjoy police dramas and compelling characters. With new seasons and engaging stories, "The Rookie" remains a top show.
