We will firstly start with 2D sketching in blue pencil and in this case we will develop ideas for a Toaster. I have selected a toaster as most ideas would generally be based around a 'block' and this will help you to develop some good techniques before trying more 'organic' freeform sketching.
For this course in developing your skills you will: produce some 2D sketches using weight of line; sketch in 2 Point perpsective; learn how to present a 'composition' of an idea using 2D and 3D sketches; use markers at an Advanced level; digital sketching; foam modelling; CAD modelling; Hard foam modelling.
On A3 paper, using a blue pencil, produce a range of 2D sketches for ideas for a toaster.
You should have 3 views for each idea (Top, Front, Side). You should sketch in the 'floor' for the front and side views.
Select one of your 2D design ideas and, using the 'composition' template provided, sketch your toaster concept from a variety of view points, including in 2 point perspective. Start this in blue pencil.
Add fine line pen (keeping it 'sketchy') Add a little shading in fine len pen (0.3) to show where light may hit or areas of shadow. You may wish to scan in your design sheet at this stage so that you have a copy ready to take into digital sketching.
You now need to marker render your design sheet. Follow the advice for marker rendering. Remember that all edges are always dark and that you need a light source - either Top Left or Top Right.
Use of black soft pencils to add further depth and detailing.
