Learn many of the countless sketching techniques used for communicating and presenting digital design ideas that work highly effectively on this in-person CPD course. Starting with simple line work, and some basic ‘rules’ of sketching, before focusing on more advanced use of layers, brushes and digital rendering techniques; applying materials and sketching over images and photographs, using Procreate on an iPad.
The aims of this one day course will be to cover a range of 2D and 3D digital Procreate sketching techniques that can quickly improve your own teaching of these skills and develop confidence in presenting design intent effectively, whether using pencil and paper or through more advanced, integrated digital techniques. The sessions throughout this full day will be progressive and dedicated to techniques that enhance design communication including:
Blue pencil underlay, weights of line, thick & thin lines, a range of different and highly effective digital marker rendering methods, shadows and highlights, 2 point perspective, masks, reference layers, sketching over photographs, enhancing models and images, applying materials, annotation. The techniques you will learn are demonstrable and will culminate in you generating a range of digital examples to take away and practise, ready to share with students.
The one day course is led by Stuart Douglas, a multi-award winning and highly successful Head of Design & Technology; Advanced Skills Teacher; CAD ‘guru’ and former Specialist Leader of Education; author and consultant.
This hands-on development opportunity will provide practical examples, strategies and techniques proven to significantly enhance the quality of your students’ coursework and design portfolios.

The outcome of this 3 day course will be a side table / coffee table top, based upon geometric patterns incorporating the skill of Resin pouring. You will learn to use some of the drawing assist guides in Procreate to generate digital ideas which will then be taken through to Onshape to model in 3D. Your work will then be output to a laser cutter; AR for Virtual Rendering; and back to Procreate for 3D digital sketching. You will learn masking techniques for rendering in 3D as well as developing an advanced digital design workflow.
Guidance will be given on how to create moulds for school workshops using standard equipment and the steps for resin pouring, including things to watch for and typical mistakes made by students.
You will create your own moulds for resin pouring and then combine some hardwood timber with resin to create some crafted products. You will cut and shape some hardwoods into your digitally designed pattern to form a mixed material side / coffee table top incorporating some areas of poured resin
Guidance and tips and tricks will be given on finishing the resin and timber, with examples shown.
