Masks / Face Coverings

Face Covering Expectations

Face Coverings are expected to be worn by staff and students in all parts of the building. This includes: entering the building, library, classroom, hallways, bathrooms, cafeteria (when not eating), front office, and gym.

CDC recommendations (7/6/20) for what qualifies as a mask: CDC: mask guidelines

  • fits snugly but comfortably against the side of the face

  • completely covers the nose and mouth

  • is secured with ties or ear loops

  • includes multiple layers of fabric

  • allows for breathing without restriction

  • can be laundered and machine dried without damage or change to shape

Gaiters and buffs are not in compliance because they do not secure with ties or ear loops.

CDC: How to Wear Masks

Students will have 4-6 scheduled outside mask breaks dailyFMS will provide neck lanyards with breakaway clips. When students are outside and 6 feet away from others or inside eating lunch they can clip their mask to their neck lanyard. Lanyards should be stored at school in lockers or some other space (laptop charger pouch?) to ensure they are at school every day.

Outside - Masks are not required when outside as long as a minimum 6 ft distance from others is being maintained. During PE a distance of 14 feet is required to be unmasked.

CDC recommends washing your mask everyday. CDC: Washing cloth face coverings

Face Shields

A note from a medical provider is the first step required to allow staff/students to wear a face shield instead of a face mask. Once the school has the note from a medical provider, we will set up a meeting with the school physician and the student's physician. If a staff / student is wearing a face shield instead of a face mask, they need to be 6 feet away from everyone else in the classroom. Face shields need to extend below the chin and back to the ears.
