Relief Project

For this project, I had to make a relief sculpture of someone out of a material that represents that person. I decided to do my brother and found a picture with a decent amount of contrast to carve out of wood. I chose a piece of birch wood because my brother loves to hike and be out in nature. I began by printing out a scale version of the picture and tracing out a plan onto the wood. I then woodburned the outline to make it more apparent. I then printed out another copy and cut out the parts that were highlighted. I glued them to think pieces of wood and used an exacto knife to cut out the pieces. I then used a hot glue gun to secure them to the base. The biggest challenge of this project was the tedious technical work that went into cutting out the small pieces of wood. If I could do something differently I would add deeper shadows.
