Choose target number and use that many counters. Put part of the counters out and hide the other part with your hand. Ask the student to tell how many are hiding (observe if "fluent" or counting in head or aloud). If automatic, then do it again with a different combination, making sure you test all combinations (EX: target 3 has 0+3, 1+2, 3+0, 2+1 so you'd do the hiding activity four times to assess the number 3). If student is able to fluently identify all combinations for that target number, assess the next number. If not, set a goal and have the student purposely practice decomposing for that number (remember C-R-A, start with visuals and connect to pictures and abstract numbers and equations).
