Suggested pacing 4-5 weeks
Teacher tips:
Cover whole number place values up to the one millions place value
Decimal place values should be taught through the one thousandths place value
Recommended Timing Guidelines-- Begin the module with reading, writing and comparing decimals (5NBT3). Then, explain the value of the digits in relation to adjacent digits (5NBT1). Next, round and estimate decimals (5NBT4). Finally, represent powers of ten with exponents (5NBT2).
∎Read, write, and compare the structure of place values including decimals to the thousandths using standard and expanded notation. (5.NBT.1, 5.NBT.2, 5.NBT.3, 5.NBT.4,) (SMP6, SMP7)
I can recognize that a number in one place value is ten times larger than the number to its right (5.NBT.1)
I can recognize that a number in one place value is 1/10 the value of the number to its left. (5.NBT.1)
I can read decimals to thousandths using standard and expanded notation. (5.NBT.3.b)
I can write decimals to thousandths (5.NBT.3)
I can compare decimals to thousandths using < , >, and = (5.NBT.3)
I can use the place value system to round numbers to thousandths. (5.NBT.4)
I can explain the patterns in the number of zeroes of the product when multiplying a number by powers of 10 (5.NBT.2)
I can use whole number exponents to denote powers of 10 (5.NBT.2)

Choose which strategy students need to practice. You may find that they need many, so start with one for a week or so, then move onto another. You are looking for efficient strategies, not mastery of all strategies. Students may find they prefer one strategy over another or change strategies for different problems. The goal is that they are flexibly using efficient strategies and are able to reason about numbers to fluently compute.
Addition Strategies Whole Numbers (Main focus)
Break apart by place value 2- and 3-digit 3-digit
Chunking (break apart one number) Multiples of ten Tens and hundreds
Friendly number one away 2 & 3-digit numbers
Doubles/near Within 20 Within 100
Subtraction Strategies Whole Numbers (Main focus)
Adjust to create easier problem Smaller numbers mixture
Keep constant distance/difference Adjust by 1 or 2 3-digit numbers
Multiplication Strategies (Review basic facts)
use doubles math flips x4,6,8 doubles math flips x3/x6
use x10 math flips multiples of ten
use x5 & x10 math flips x4/x9 friendly
mixed math flips harder facts
Division Strategies (Review basic facts)
use multiplication/known facts Math Flips basic facts division
Fraction Strategies (work on Fractions at least one day a week)
reasoning models Number line benchmark fractions on number line
Decimals comparison/ordering

“Closure in a lesson does not mean to pack up and move on. Rather, it is a cognitive activity that helps students focus on what was learned and whether it made sense and had meaning.” How the Brain Learns Mathematics (2007) P. 104
There are many ways to wrap up and reflect the day's activities but this step is often overlooked or rushed. Purposely plan and allow time for students to have closure each day (even if it means setting a timer or daily alarm so you don't run out of time).

Nearpod Math lessons
These are activities to give students mixed, spaced practice based on the big ideas for 5th grade math.
These resource sheets are intended to reinforce procedures and concepts. They should not be used as a source of direct instruction or whole-group practice. Please select pages carefully based on your students' needs.
You may have students work on these with a partner, independently with an answer key to self-check (tip: use sheet protectors), or as a journal response. It is not necessary to have students complete a page every day- the intent is to have opportunities to spiral concepts for mixed practice, not do "busy" work.
