For WWD&S Camp is several things. As a member of the Westwood Debate & Speech Team you must attend our school camp to compete in early season tournaments.
Westwood In House Camp
If you are a varsity debater (returning debater) camp will be start on August 8th. During this period of time each member will be responsible for 2 individual sessions and 2 group sessions on campus or virtual.
If you are a novice debater (new to debate) you must attend camp in order to attend any of the of early season tournaments. The third tournament of the year will be the first that you are able to sign up for. Information on the Warrior Debate & Speech Intensive can be found under the Community Outreach tab on this website. First year may also choose to attend one of the recommended camps for first year to second year competitors that are listed below if family choose to meet the early season tournament requirement.
Private Debate Camp
Some students may choose to supplant their debate experience by attending a private debate camp. These camps are truly a great learning and social experience. There are many debate camps throughout the country, but really there are some very good camps right here in Austin and Texas. In addition, because these camps are often held at universities they will allow you to spend a good amount of time on a university campus. Below you will see information about various camps. While I cannot personally endorse any of them officially, these made the list because they are worth the value at each rate based on reviews from previous students and other debate coaches. Camp application deadlines are firm and failure to apply early will most likely mean you will be excluded. Meeting the deadline is often too late as they fill up quickly. But before you read that section let me say clearly while these camps will provide you a great advantage going into any debate season they are not mandatory, but strongly encouraged. If you desire to be a top level competitor you will find they are almost essential.
These are simply my rambling thoughts for students as they prepare for camp after many years of experience with camps.
