The Westwood Debate and Speech team has been a nationally rank squad for 20 plus years. This would not have happen and will not continue to happen without the support of the numerous volunteers from Westwood High School students, to the numerous parents and guardians to individuals in our community.

Student Volunteers
As a member of the Westwood Debate and Speech time each student is required to complete a certain about of volunteer hired in support of the team. Specific details are located in the team handbook located on the competition page.
In support of student volunteering the Westwood Debate and Speech Team supports two annual awards.
The Speaking and Service Award annually recognizes students who go above and beyond in their service to their teams, schools, and communities. Students receive this award when they earn 200 service points in a given year, the maximum number possible in a school year in our Honor Society. Fewer than 2% of the entire membership of the NSDA receive this award. Annually Westwood High has more then 15 recipients.
Considered the most prestigious service award for High School students, according to multiple sources. . This annual award is awarded to a very few number students each year nationally. Student can earn a Bronze, Silver or Gold Award depending on their service to the team and in the larger community. This awards in support and supported by the Westwood Debate and Speech Booster Club a critical and important part of our success. Students who are interested in more information about qualification and application for the PVSA should speak with the Team President and/or Vice President.
Student Opportunities
There are literally thousands of hours of opportunity for our student to volunteer in support of the Westwood Debate and Speech Team.
Support our Regional and State-Wide Tournaments - Each year the team hosts two significant contests in support of academic competition: (1) The Westwood Bowl - our annual debate and speech contest hosted for student thoughout central Texas and the state as a whole. (2) Westwood UIL Invitation - our annual UIL readiness invitational contestant is hosted for more than 50 schools from central Texas and the State. Our UIL Invitational is considered by most to be the best invitational in the state and certainly boosted the most competitor state-wide and the best hospitality bar none.
Support our Summer Camps - Each year the team hosted several summer camps for aspiring Middle Schoolers introducing them to debate and speech and preparing them middle and high school level competition in the coming season.
Support the Warrior Academy - Warrior Academy is the Westwood Debate After School Training for MIddle School Students. In additional to numerous After School Classes with highly qualified nationally ranked coaches and staff the academy runs a series of three debate tournaments throughout the year for middle school competitors. This program also help trained and coach student to compete at the Middle School Tournament of Champions, sponsored by the University of Kentucky each year. The Middle School TOC is the most prestigious debate tournament for Middle School students.

Guardian/Parent Volunteering
As a parent of a Westwood Team Member you will receive periodic emails about volunteering opportunity. These opportunity can defer some of the team costs. Please see Financial Obligations page for more details.
Each year the team awards a special award at our Banquet to the Parent/Guardian who contribute the most. There name is also added to a perpetuate plaque in the debate room. We take great pride in celebrate our volunteers!
