Classifying Matter

This unit will review safety practices inside and outside the classroom. Students are expected to follow safe practices when conducting investigations outdoors or during field trips away from the classroom. In this unit, the student will measure, compare, and contrast physical properties of matter, including mass, volume, states (solid, liquid, gas), temperature, magnetism, and the ability to sink or float. Students will be expected to compare and contrast a variety of mixtures including solutions.

In second grade, students classified matter by physical properties including temperature, texture, and flexibility. Students also described and classified samples of matter as solids, liquids, and gases, and demonstrated that solids have a definite shape and that liquids and gases take the shape of their container.

In third grade, students are introduced to measuring mass, magnetism and whether an object has the ability to sink or float. Students will apply their prior experiences of measuring and recording physical properties to the more rigorous skill of comparing and contrasting separate properties.
