The purpose of the faculty mentorship is to foster an intellectual, personal, clinical and professional development of each student throughout his/her clinical experience
Each student is assigned an RFU Nurse Anesthesia Program faculty mentor prior to beginning clinical residency.
The faculty mentor’s role is to support the intellectual and professional maturation of the student. Also, the faculty mentor ensures the experiences the students are encountering in the clinical arena are consistent with the Program’s policies and procedures, and the standards set forth by the Council on Accreditation (COA).
The faculty mentor engages in an on-going dialogue with the student through various forms of communication and functions as a clinical resource for the student on all topics related to perioperative anesthesia management. Additionally, the faculty mentor will be engaged in the clinical progress of the student by:
o Reviewing formative and summative evaluations.
o Engaging in clinically related discussions with the student to assess clinical reasoning.
o Assessing whether or not the student feels he/she is appropriately supervised to ensure patient safety and compliance with COA guidelines.
o Assessing whether or not the student feels he/she is in compliance with reasonable time commitment for patient safety and effective learning not to exceed 64 hours per week.
o Reviewing Typhon numbers monthly and identifying potential deficiencies in clinical training.
Clinical coordinators and preceptors are also encouraged to contact the faculty mentors regarding a student concern if they feel that may facilitate the learning process.
