Clinical Evaluation Process
Students are required to demonstrate increasing levels of critical thinking, application, efficiency, and integration of knowledge as compared to the preceding residency, as they move from novice to competent anesthesia provider and clinician. The SRNA’s performance is evaluated relative to the following objectives:
▪ PATIENT SAFETY
▪ CRITICAL THINKING
▪ APPROPRIATELY PERIANESTHETIC MANAGEMENT
▪ EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION SKILLS
▪ PROFESSIONALISM
Formative Evaluations
Formative evaluations are completed using the formative evaluation tool provided as an online survey. The tool is easily accessible using your smart phone. These surveys are immediately available to the RFU faculty for review. Paper copies are provided for emergency use only. They are discouraged due to delays in the faculty receiving them and the potential for paper copies to be selectively withheld by students.
At the end of each clinical day, the preceptor should evaluate the performance of the student in the listed categories. Written comments that provide constructive suggestions are an integral part of the evaluation process and will help the student improve their performance. These can be provided in the free text section. The tools can be accessed by scanning a QR code or by bookmarking the webpage. Failure by the student to provide formative evaluation form may result in disciplinary action, so your cooperation is appreciated and valued.
Summative Evaluations
At the end of each rotation, the clinical coordinator or his/her designee will complete a summative evaluation tool. A sample of this evaluation is provided in the manual binder as well as electronically on the RFU external thumb drive. It will also be sent in an email at the end of the student’s rotation as a reminder.
This summative evaluation is expected to capture feedback from all of the anesthesia staff who have worked with the SRNA, and will reflect the overall evaluation of the student’s performance while at the site. These are competency-based evaluations that increase in complexity over the course of six (6) residency quarters, and determine the readiness of the student for increased levels of responsibility. These evaluations should be discussed with the student prior to their departure from the clinical site, and faxed (or emailed) to the RFU administrative assistant 2 weeks prior to the end of the rotation. Both the coordinator and the student should sign the summative evaluation. Program administrators and faculty mentors will review the summative evaluations with the student during on-campus visits and determine readiness to progress to the next residency. These evaluations will become part of the student’s permanent record.

It is possible to meet the expectations of the clinical rotation but have identified issues, either professional or knowledge based, that can jeopardize clinical progression. Consistent concerns related to professionalism or foundational knowledge that is documented on formative evaluations by multiple preceptors can trigger an on-campus meeting to review student performance. These patterns of evidence may trigger a focused clinical evaluation and remediation plan or subject the student to dismissal from the program.
Evaluation of Clinical Sites and Preceptors
Students are required to complete clinical site and preceptor evaluations as part of each clinical practicum course requirement at the end of each rotation. These evaluations are part of the program’s ongoing process to create programmatic improvements and acknowledge outstanding clinical faculty and clinical site.
