Appropriate Student Identification in the Clinical Area
It is an expectation that all student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNA) properly identify themselves as an SRNA. Failure to identify oneself as an SRNA through omission, also qualifies as improper identification. SRNAs should sign all clinical documents with their first and last names followed by RN, SRNA.
● Identification Badges: Facility ID badges must be worn at all times and must be visible and worn at chest height, unless patient care dictates otherwise. If site specific identification is not provided by an affiliate clinical site, the student will wear their school identification badges at the clinical site.
● Introductions: The student will introduce themselves to patients and operating room personnel in a manner that clearly identifies them as Registered Nurses in training to become a nurse anesthetist. The terms “Nurse Anesthetist Trainee" or “Student Registered Nurse Anesthetist” are both acceptable. Introductions to a patient must also include the following: “I will be working with (name), your anesthesiologist and/or (name), your nurse anesthetist”. This is a professional expectation, which supports fair and ethical care of patients. It is also an accreditation standard that is non-negotiable.
NOTE: Failure to identify to a patient as a student is grounds for dismissal from the program.
