The Catholic tradition comprises three major expressions of the life of prayer: vocal prayer, meditation, and contemplative prayer. They have in common the recollection of the heart.
Vocal prayer, founded on the union of body and soul in human nature, associates the body with the interior prayer of the heart, following Christ's example of praying to his Father and teaching the Our Father to his disciples. CCC 2722
Meditation is a prayerful quest engaging thought, imagination, emotion, and desire. Its goal is to make our own in faith the subject considered, by confronting it with the reality of our own life. CCC 2723
Contemplative prayer is the simple expression of the mystery of prayer. It is a gaze of faith fixed on Jesus, an attentiveness to the Word of God, a silent love. It achieves real union with the prayer of Christ to the extent that it makes us share in his mystery. CCC 2724

Stillness & Silence. Busyness and noise have become so much a part of our lives that many are uncomfortable with periods of stillness. Eliminating activities and noise is an essential way to remove the clutter and hush the rush so we can focus, rest and relax. Then we'll be prepared, from within our inner selves, to sense the divine presence.
Jesus got away from activities and noise to enjoy some stillness and silence with God. Didn't he suggest the same to his followers, "Come a part lest you come apart."
("Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest// {Mark 6:31)).
Meditation is a universal spiritual practice and a way of prayer. It is a way of finding stillness underneath the mental noise. It calls us to enter within, to move to a realm of silence, to let go of thinking and imagining and to experience true peace at the core of our very being.
Meditation is the work we do to enter into contemplation.
Meditation is not relaxation. We use relaxation exercises e.g. reflective music, breathing to enter into the work of meditation. It is simplicity itself. We hold ourselves alert and attentive during the entire time of prayer. As a fourth century desert father John Cassian put it, 'we centre ourselves, and focus on the God whom we do not see, whom we do not hear, but whose active presence we totally accept', we simply surrender ourselves and rest in God. This is where faith enters into our prayer. Meditation teaches us that being is more important that doing; we move from the head to the heart and it challenges us to overcome our self-centredness.
Contemplative Prayer
Contemplative Prayer is the simple awareness of the presence of God. It is prayer without words or images. Contemplation is not a method of prayer to be chosen at will, like meditation. It is a gift from God into which one is drawn. Contemplation in the Christian tradition more closely resembles what is generally understood as meditation in Eastern religions such as Buddhism.
Beth Nolen (1999) suggests that contemplative prayer has the following characteristics
• Faith and trust in the presence of God
• An inner awareness of God
• An awareness of the word of God
• A relationship with God in our hearts
• An act of commitment to God
• A response to the presence of God
It involves:
• Taking time to be alone with God
• Turning our eyes and heart towards Jesus
• Dwelling in God’s love and grace
• Silence
We use contemplative prayer to help us become totally focussed on the presence of God regardless of the noise or interruptions in the world around us. Contemplative prayer is not about talking to God or talking with God, rather it is being aware of the presence of God in the very centre of our being.
This type of prayer helps students to relax and de-stress and understand their connectedness to God and the rest of their world. It also can help them in their search for identity.
