Washington Park offers a variety of fun things to do, so each time you’re there it’s a new experience. If you’re with your kids, on the west side there is a playground to fill their childhood with great memories. Like me, they’ll come back years later for the nostalgic feel. But for those who have dogs, the park is pet friendly as long as you follow their rules regarding dogs. If that doesn’t spark your interest, you can still check out the lagoon on the east side which is a great area for picnics and/or fishing. But If you’re more athletic, you’ll want to check out the 12 tennis courts at the Velasco Tennis Center in the center of the park.
While it may be nestled in the heart of Springfield, you can use the trails for an escape from the chaos of downtown. The refreshing scenery compels you to go for a walk, jog, bike ride, or skate. Whatever you choose, the trees and the breath of fresh air will make you feel one with nature.

Even as the weather starts getting cooler, the park still gives you something to look forward to. Every fall Washington Park hosts the jack-o-lantern spectacular and the Carve for the Carillon. They make sure you and your family can truly appreciate the season. If fall isn't your favorite season, “Bike and Hike days” are offered from April through September. The staff will barricade the main entrances to minimize traffic which encourages community members and families to use that time to safely walk, bike, or hike.
Washington park is one of Springfields historical parks. The park was established in 1901 and was designed by Ossian Simonds. The design and many of its features date back to the park's original development. Some of the park's historic features are the large, enclosed pavilion, the band pavilion, and the lagoon on the east side. Other details that make the park so unique are the gardens and the bell tower.
