Entry Level School Bus Driver Training
Course Outline:
1. Prepare for Knowledge Test (if you have not already taken)
2. Application for Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) (available if needed)
3. Theory Instruction: Students must earn a minimum overall score of 80% on Theory Assessment
a. Basic Operation
b. Safe Operating Procedures
c. Advanced Operating Procedures
d. Vehicle systems and Reporting Malfunctions
e. Non-Driving Activities
4. Behind-The-Wheel (BTW) Range - applicant must have valid CLP
5. Behind-The-Wheel (BTW) Public Road - applicant must have valid CLP
District/School Responsibilities:
Candidates must possess the oral communication skills to communicate with NJMVC state examiners, law enforcement, school officials, and students.
Conduct Customer Abstract Information Retrieval (CAIR) abstract on potential candidate: must possess clean driving record. (Must be done before start of class).
Pre-employment – An employer must receive a negative drug test result before permitting a CDL driver to operate a school bus, CMV. (§382.301). (Must be done before start of class)
Applicants must be physically fit for driving a CMV and will need to be able to pass a DOT physical in order to obtain a CDL. https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/medical/driver-medical-requirements/national-registry-certified-medical-examiners
Candidates must undergo a criminal history background check prior to the road test. Must be done within 90 days of road test.

District Responsibilities For the Road Test:
Applicant or district may schedule the road test with a vehicle that is applicable to the type of license applied for. This training does not include air brakes. If you require air brake training special arrangements must be made.
Vehicle must be free from any defect as the applicant will be inspecting the vehicle as per CMV Road Skills Test.
The driver taking the trainee to the road test must also possess a valid license, and the appropriate credentials for the vehicle they are driving to the test.
