When you apply to college, you will usually see four different types of applications:
Regular Decision
Early Decision
Early Action
Rolling Admission
When students think of applying to college, they are usually thinking of Regular Decision - the applications are due in early January, and you'll hear back from a school in March or April.
For students who want to hear from schools earlier, they usually apply Early Decision (ED) or Early Action (EA).
The main difference between ED and EA is that Early Decision is binding - this means that if you get accepted to a school through an ED application, you are committing to that school before seeing financial aid!
Check out this in-depth video of when to apply as an Early Decision candidate!
That depends!
If you are okay with committing to a school without considering other options, have a "dream school" in mind, have a strong GPA, AND you've had a conversation with Joe about your family finances, then you should consider Early Decision!
If you're interested in a top school and believe that you would succeed there, then you should also consider Early Decision as most schools have a higher acceptance rate for ED applications compared to regular apps.
If you want to be one of the first ones to hear from a school, want to get this process done early, or are excited about the process, then you should consider Early Action!
You can see links to Early Decision & Early Action schools below. NOTE: Early Decision is a major commitment; because of this, no student may apply ED to a school without first having a meeting with Joe. Financial aid varies among schools, so there is a limited list of ED schools that are "Joe-approved."
