Join us for an introductory exploration of American Sign Language and the Deaf/Hard of Hearing (DHH) community. Have fun with us as we learn why ASL is not simply “English spoken with your hands.” Together we will learn the alphabet and numbers (which combined make up every hand shape in the entire language), fingerspelling, basic introductory phrases, animals, colors, and more!
DISCLAIMER: As this class is not taught by a CODA (child of deaf adult), DHH individual, or a certified ASL instructor, we will cover the basics of ASL, as to not overstep the wishes of or to misrepresent the Deaf community.
Having deaf neighbors from a young age piqued my interest in ASL/Deaf culture, and I grew up using the signs for thank you, please, etc. with my family. I took ASL in high school to fulfill my foreign language requirement with Rebecca (Becky) Coyne, who is a CODA ASL instructor and certified interpreter.
2nd Hour (10:35-11:30) - Room 4 & 5
Class Fee $95
Join us for an introduction to the techniques of Sabre Fencing! We’ll have fun learning about this Olympic martial art form that evolved from historical cavalry sabres. Fencing is a fast paced, offense and defense, agility focused sport, and in this class we will cover target areas, cuts, parries, footwork, and our core values of honor, balance, integrity, discipline, and respect. On the last day of class we’ll hold a mini tournament game — may the best fencer win!
DISCLAIMER: Foam “blades” will be used in this class so no special equipment is required – with the exception of:
1) lightweight, appropriate shoes like sneakers (no crocs or sandals) that provide stability
2) stretchy, comfortable pants (no jeans)
As each class builds on the last, consistent attendance is STRONGLY encouraged!
