Together, we have chosen Fatty Legs by Christy Jordan-Fenton and Margaret Pokiak-Fenton as the book of the month. We chose this novel because it is based on the true story of author Margret-Olemaun Pokiak-Fenton's experiences in a Canadian Residential School. For roughly sixty years, Margaret-Olemaun kept a secret about her experience at the Aklavik Residential School hidden from those closest to her in fear of judgment. One afternoon driving to town, Margaret-Olemaun shared her heartbreaking story with her daughter-in-law (and co-author), Christy. After much encouragement from her family, Margaret-Olemuan finally decided to share her bravery with the rest of the world through the publication of Fatty Legs. We believe that Fatty Legs allows the reader to enhance their overall understanding of not only the traumas that occurred within Residential Schools but also strengthens the reader's appreciation for the Indigenous culture. In conclusion, we believe that this text would allow the teacher to apply foundational knowledge about First Nations, Metis, and Inuit for the benefit of all students (Government of Alberta, 2019).
