Making Play Doh/Haciendo Plastilina

Working with Play-Doh is a great way to incorporate many different skills. We have to be able to follow directions to help mom and dad make the play-Doh. We have to be able to wait our turn to open (delayed gratification). We need to use fine and gross motor skills to scoop and pour the ingredients as well as mix them. We also work on math skills, like counting and color identification skills.

Trabajando con plastilina es una buena manera de incorporar diferentes habilidades. Debemos tener la habilidad de seguir instrucciones para ayudar a los padres a hacer plastilina. Debemos tener la habilidad de esperar nuestro turno para abrir (gratificacion retrasada). Debemos usar habilidades de motor fino y grueso para sacar y verter los ingredientes y mezclarlos. Tambien se trabaja en habilidades de matematica como contar, y identificacion de colores.

Playing with Play-Doh/Jugando con Plastilina

When playing with Play-Doh we also have many skills that we us. We use our fingers to digging Play-Doh of a cup or out of a whisk. We cut out Play-Doh into different shapes, we press objects into it and create different textures. You can use cups and bowls to make different size circles. Or, we can pinch small pieces and roll them into peas with our finger tips. We use our hands to squeeze, then pull and break the Play-Doh. We can also cut with butter knives and roll with cups if you don’t have a rolling pin. We added unsweetened Kool-Aid to our Play-Doh to give it an interesting scent and color, but you can add your favorite extract from your kitchen cupboard.

Caundo juegas con plastilina, hay muchas habilidades que usamos. Usamos nuestros dedos para escavar la plastilina de un recipiente, o de un batidor. Cortamos la plastilina en diferentes figuras, precionamos objetos contra la plastilina y creamos diferentes texturas. Puedes usar vasos y platos hondos para hacer circulos de diferentes tamaños. O puedes pellizcar piezas pequellas y rodarlas para hacer bolitas con nuestros dedos. Usamos nuestras manos para apretar y jalar la plastilina. Tambien podemos cortar la plastilina con cuchillos de sierra, y rodarla usando vasos si no tienes un rodillo. Nosotros agregamos Kool-Aid sin azucar a nuestra plastilina para darle un color y olor interesante, pero Tambien puedes agregar cualquier extracto de tu cocina.

Ms. Amy and Eva make Bathtub Finger Paints!

This a really great activity that hits so many developmental areas for a wide range of ages. Make these finger paints with your child; you can help them measure ingredients, count, and stir. Have them stir the mixture 10 times and count with them 1, 2, 3… ask your child, “what color do you want?” let them pick, and point to the color; talk about how to mix them and make new colors. This activity also involves motor skills; mixing, pouring and scooping are all part of this activity, not to mention writing letters, numbers, and shapes, how fun! Once you have created the different colors and you are playing with them, ask your child what they think. Does the paint feel sticky or slimy, dry or wet, soft or hard, cold or hot, and what does it smell like? These are all excellent ways to bring language and sensory exploration into this activity.

Ingredients:

1/3 cup clear, mild liquid dish soap
1 tablespoon cornstarch
food coloring.

Directions:

Mix liquid soap and cornstarch in a small bowl until blended.
Pour the mixture, in equal parts, into several sections of a plastic ice cube tray.
Add 102 drops of food coloring to each section of the tray and mix with a small spoon.

Concoction Tips & Ideas:

Use bathtub Finger Paints on the inside of the bathtub to paint pictures or play simple taking turns games
Bathtub Finger Paints also work well as a traditional Finger Paint.

Ingredientes:

Draw or print the octopus below, have your child add glue to the tentacles with a Q-tip, paint brush or their fingers! Model for your child placing Cheerios onto the tentacles using just the tip of your pointer finger and thumb. You can ask them how many they want, (e.g. Would you like 4 or 5 cheerios?). You can also use colored cereal O's group them by color and make each arm a different color.

Finger-Print Fish/Pez de Huellas de Dedo

Cut out a basic fish shape, then have your child place their thumb or pointer finger into either paint or stamp pads, if you have them. Then they place their finger on the fish to create scales. They can add different colors, but if you are using paint you may want to let it dry first before adding different colors.

First paint the paper bag and let it dry. Then have your child cut slits into the bottom of the paper bag for the tentacles or have them help you do it. Add Googly eyes or just draw eyes on the bag to make a Jellyfish.

What you’ll need:

Coffee filter
water color paint or food coloring
Pipe cleaner or clothes pin

Take a coffee filter and have your child color it with watercolor paint or food coloring. You can use a paint brush, a squirt bottle or a dropper. Once it is dry, take a pipe cleaner or a clothes pin to make the body and antennas.

Egg Carton Flower

What you’ll need:

1 egg carton cut into four pockets.
Any kind of food color, paint, or watercolor; you can even use packets of Kool-Aid to paint with, just add water.
Straw, pipe cleaner or popsicle or coffee stir stick to glue to the backside of the flower.
Glue

Decorate the inside of the egg carton pockets. Use paint, stickers, glitter or anything else you think of. Add a yellow dot or button in the center of the four pockets and glue to pockets to the straw, pipe cleaner, or whatever you choose to the backside of the egg carton flour.

If possible print the above flower pot image. If you are not able to print you can draw a flower pot and write the poem as shown above. Lightly paint your child's hands (if you put the paint on thickly your child's hand will slide on the paper). Help them to place their hands, one at a time, on the paper at the top of the stem on the picture.

Draw or print a ladybug and have your child create the dots on its back. You can use markers, chalk, crayons, or q-tips and paint. Model with the utensil that you going to make dots on the ladybug and pair the activity with a verbal cue "dot, dot..."

This is an easy activity to do. Try writing your child's name on a piece of paper in all capital letters and have them add stickers or marker dots or anything else, such as a paint dot or glue on dried beans, anything will work.

Eggs with wet chalk

Cut a egg shape with paper and using painters tape; create lines across the egg. Take the chalk and wet it with water and have your child color the egg. Try and see if they can color in the spaces. After the egg dries, remove the tape.
