This series was taken during the pandemic quarantine. The dark tone of this piece portrays the emotions that were felt during quarantine, the title itself expresses the bittersweet moments I experienced, both pain and happiness. The scarf resembles the gradual feeling of time loss, reflecting the sense of sadness and tiredness. It is aimed to allow the audience to relate to this current situation, I want to be able to tell my own personal experience through the colours and symbolism.
The colours used in the five lino prints symbolize a range of emotions that humans can feel. The vertical placement mimics a film strip, capturing a moment of happiness. Bright colours are used to convey our feelings and the expression of me smiling; it signifies how smiles or laughter could disguise our hidden feelings. The subject gaze is directed towards the viewer, creating an open connection.
Inspired by the style of “Untitled” (Portrait of Ross in LA) by Felix Gonzalez-Torres, the installation aims to provoke a sense of happiness through vibrant colours and candies. The combination of nature and art encourages the audience to be more aware of our environment and find beauty and positive bits in our lives. As the audience reaches for the candy, they are reaching out to happiness, whereas the sweetness also adds to their emotion.
This self-portrait was inspired by “Woven Portraits” by David Samuel Stern. Portraying the concept of self-love and acceptance, the title refers to the saying “two sides of the same coin”. The self-portrait reflects the acceptance of those sides of myself. The layering effect creates an optical illusion for the audience; the longer you stare at it, it seems like you could almost choose which to stare at; expressing how individuals tend to choose the more “likeable” side to meet new people.
Inspired by "Sensory Memory" by Jayoung Yoon, the print aims to express the dilemma we have when deciding to think logically or follow our heart. The layering effect adds more depth and symbolizes how thoughts can be "distorted" at times, as the transparency of the material creates a sense of movement. It also highlights the cause of the unexplained emotions that we feel. The heart's spotty texture makes it more realistic, which gives the audience a detailed representation of the human heart.
Inspired by neuroscience, the wire sculpture reflects the complexity of the human mind and emotion. The choice of material signifies how it is equivalent to our thoughts, the tangled wires showing the contradictions and unexplained emotions we feel at times. The use of red yarn represents the nerves of the spinal cord. The human mind is a complex phenomenon, both physically and mentally. The decisions we make every day, our emotions, all of our worries are all from our minds.
Lino prints were chosen to emphasize smooth textures and emphasis the line of emotions. It showcased 4 of the most common emotions that we feel on a daily basis. A colour is chosen to represent each emotion, black is fear, red is anger, grey is sadness and orange is happiness. Different colours can be portrayed differently and can influence a person’s mental or physical state. Each individual print allows the audience to focus on the lines and facial expression, minimizing the distractions.
This installation piece is designed to be projected in a dark space. The video shows the small bits of happiness throughout my life, it is set as a reminder for myself and the viewer to live a happy life. The transition between the two parts holds a symbolism of a caterpillar transforming into a butterfly. The video effect layer acts a protection of my young self, the clip gradually becomes clearer, indicating I have grown and learnt to treasure these little moments in life.
