My approach in the classroom -
I believe that understanding students and building a relationship with students is the cornerstone that classroom education is built upon. For instance, I have seen students refuse to work in the classroom, but when they are individually approached within a relationship, they become interested and excited to do the work. I believe in storytelling as a way to communicate information and help students feel invested in learning. I want to make information interesting and help grow their curiosity. When students start to talk about the subject and get excited and passionate, then I will know I created learning. Finally, I believe in the Universal Design for Learning. This method of teaching helps cater to all students' learnings and accommodates their abilities and needs. It means my classroom will not have extra or unnecessary hurdles or obstacles for learning. I was a diverse learner and I needed flexibility to be successful in the classroom. I believe that by bringing in numerous ways of learning and numerous ways of completing homework, students with different learning needs will have a chance at success.
How I support student learning -
I want students to take an assignment and have the freedom to be creative with it. I believe that being myself, showing students that I am human, can create an inviting classroom where they can grow, learn, and not be afraid to make mistakes. Mistakes happen and when students struggle, I believe that working with the students, giving feedback, and having them complete it again will be important for their growth.
Assignment Creativity and Universal Design
Giving students an assignment such as “portraiture” and allowing them to identify what that means for them and being open to using any medium.
Allowing students to revise work for improved comprehension and grades
How I foster an effective educational environment -
I believe critical thinking are foundational to creating student learners. I don’t want my students to memorize and repeat information. I want them to think through the information presented and challenge themselves (and me) with new ideas. Finally, I believe in doing hands-on activities as a way of creating learning. As a person who struggled with reading, I understand that different people learn in different ways and I would like students to have numerous ways of taking in information.
Creating Critical Thinking and Creative Learning
Structuring group work, where students need to collaborate with other students can create critical thinking. Students can learn from each other and hear different ways of thinking about topics.
Students will be encouraged to jump into the learning space. It is important that students learn to ask questions when they arise, as it helps people process information in the moment and develop their ideas on a given topic.
Complete research on the topic they are interested in - by structuring topics with guiding questions, students can learn how to research, what questions to ask to help lead them in the right direction.
