Junior Roller Derby groups skaters based on skating skill level. There are three levels, each having a written assessment on derby rules and a skating skills proficiency assessment as defined by the Junior Roller Derby Association (JRDA). The levels are a measure of the skaters safety to play at the given level - it is not an evaluation of their competitiveness playing roller derby. Only coaches can check off skills on the assessment sheet, but skaters should use this information to focus their practice time. When all assessments are met and the coach is comfortable with the skater's ability, they may be promoted to the next level. Especially for level 3, the coach will consult with the skater and the skater's parent(s)/Guardian(s) to make sure everyone understands what full contact is.
Beginners and Level 1 Skills Assessment
Beginning skaters learn basic skating, how to fall, and skating safety as they qualify for level 1. They will play derby scrimmages with other beginners and level 1 skaters. When level 1 derby is played, no hitting or leaning on other skaters is allowed.
Level 2 derby adds leaning and light pushing to permitted moves on the derby track. Skaters may not accelerate into a block. Skaters are becoming more proficient at the basic skating skills and are starting to learn more advanced skills.
A skater that meets level 3 criteria has learned all of the necessary skating skills and can play full-contact roller derby. Level 3 skaters are also eligible to make the RJR All Star Team.
