Presume Competence
Week 1: A Greater Mission
Objectives:
Understand historical and legal foundations of exceptional education.
Practice the use instructional strategies and materialsby using Cornell Notetaking.
In this lesson you will explore the history of disability rights. Specifically, you will watch the documentary CRIP CAMP and use an instructional strategy appropriate as a Tier 1 support in schools (i.e., appropriate for all students and useful for students with disabilities) as you take notes. This film is rated “R” by the Motion Picture Association of America for “some language including sexual references”, so you may find a comparable movie that addresses the evolution of disability rights if you feel you will be offended by the content.
Instructions:
Create a Cornell Notes page for this lesson. Title your notes, The Disability Revolution.
Watch Crip Camp, either on Netflix or linked here on Youtube. It's a full-length movie, so settle in. Invite a friend and make a night of it!
In your notes, record key disability legislation as you watch/listen. Include other thoughts/ideas about the topic of disability on your Cornell Note page.
Keep your notes brief! This is NOT a writing assignment, and you will not be graded on length of notes. The goal is to reinforce key material, and also to practice using a basic strategy that is helpful for learners of all abilities. Simple is good, doodles are fine!
Take a picture of your Cornell Notes page and upload here for credit.
Include a movie rating from 1-10 and a brief statement about its effectiveness in introducing you to legislation (one line is fine!). Your honest opinion is valued and does not count against you.
