Presume Competence
For this assignment, you will apply the principles of Fidelity of Implementation and Progress Monitoring to learn something new or change a behavior of you own (or a loved one!). To begin, think of something you specifically would like learn over the next three weeks. It can be learning a new language using an app like duo lingo, increasing your completion of course assignments, changing your eating habits, or even improving your bowling score!
Remember, fidelity of implementation consists of three key components:
Adherence—Following the instructional procedures of the practice or program as they were intended and implementing all components in the correct order
Exposure/duration—Implementing the practice or program for the recommended:
Length of session (e.g., 40 minutes)
Duration of EBP (e.g., 12 weeks, one semester, one academic year)
Frequency (e.g., daily, three times per week)
Quality of delivery—Delivering the EBP using good practices (
Consider the content you read about the steps of Progress Monitoring in the IRIS Module,
Evidence-Based Practices (Part 3):Evaluating Learner Outcomes and Fidelity.
Step 1: While reviewing the IRIS module (especially starting on page 3 of the Perspectives section) create a basic worksheet for yourself and have it ready to use to collect data (baseline, graph, probe, etc.) when you begin your progress monitoring project.
Step 2: Set a target goal for yourself at the end of 3 weeks (learn 30 new phrases in Spanish; lower your golf score by 3 strokes; etc.).
Step 3. Select a method/strategy for reaching your goal (i.e., putting for 15 minutes every other day for 3 weeks to see if it helps reduce your golf score). Conduct a task analysis of the EBP (in this case, the method you will use to reach your goal) procedures- so putting practice is the strategy in the earlier example). . A task analysis is the process of breaking down activities into smaller, sequenced steps that can be easily defined and readily observed.
Step 4: Develop an observational checklist. Two types of items should be included on the checklist. The first addresses the number of procedural steps to which you should adhere, which correspond to the items in the task analysis. The second addresses the quality of implementation—how well you implement the intervention. In the golf example: Did you do it as planned? Length of time (15 mins), number of days, etc.?
Step 5: Develop (or use the one here) a Progress Monitoring Form to report your final results.
Step 6: Review the form & revise as needed,
Don't forget Fidelity!
Fidelity data should be collected frequently at first (e.g., twice per week). As you become more familiar with a practice or program and achieve and maintain high levels of fidelity, monitoring can occur less frequently (e.g., once per month).
As mentioned in the IRIS module, fidelity is best measured through the use of observational data. One way to conduct an observation is to ask a friend to watch you implementing the intervention. Alternately, you can video yourself implementing the intervention and review it later. In either case, the observer needs to complete the fidelity checklist, recording each procedural step to which you adhere, any steps that you miss, and the addition of a step or component. In general, objective observers are more accurate sources of fidelity data than are educators who monitor their own implementation. You must provide information about how you established fidelity in your final report!
Determine how well you did with implementing your plan with FIDELITY:
Step 1. Determine the total number of items on the fidelity measure (excluding the quality items).
Step 2. Count the number of items you implemented correctly.
Step 3. Divide the number of items completed correctly by the total number of items.
Step 4. Change the decimal result in step three to a percentage.
Submission
There are 3 things you will submit for this assignment:
Your Fidelity Checklist to include the percentage of fidelity of implementation.
A Progress Monitoring Form like the one above completed based on your own self-study.
A brief video (10 seconds or less- can be posted on outside source with link, including Instagram) or pictures(3 or less) of yourself using the intervention you selected.
Notes: Video quality doesn't matter! Have fun with this assignment! The goal is for you to thoroughly understand the detail that goes into learning, and the processes teachers are expected to use to ensure learning is taking place!
