Literacy

This term in Literacy we will be reading the book Ocean Meets Sky by The Fan Brothers. This beautiful and poignant story has stunning illustrations throughout and explores themes of family, memory and loss. Children will be given a variety of meaningful writing opportunities throughout the sequence of learning and gradually build up the skills to write a setting description of one of the fantasy settings in the story.

Children will be focusing on choosing and effectively using well-chosen adjectives as well as continuing their learning about the use of conjunctions in a sentence. There will also be a focus on the correct use of tense and planning their writing.

Finally, the children will build on their understanding of writing instructions to write a set of instructions about How to Make a Delicious Smoothie! This will be linked to their work n D&T.

Cursive Handwriting

From this term, we will be encouraging the children to be using cursive script in all their books. We will model this in class and during handwriting session we will be revisiting how to form the joins correctly and which letters should be joined and which shouldn't. Please encourage pupils to be writing in cursive text at home too!

Maths

In Maths this term we will be learning about Money. The children will be learning about coins and notes and learning how to count in pounds and pence. They will also be required to use their knowledge of addition and subtraction to work out money problems and find change from £1.

We will begin our learning on Multiplication and Division. Children will be introduced to the multiplication and division symbols. They will learn about equal groups and arrays in multiplication and sharing in division. We will be focusing on the 2, 5 and 10 x tables.

Things to do at home:

History and Geography

Following our 'Where in the World?' theme, we will be learning about Floella Benjamin and her impact and legacy. We will learn about her life in Trinidad before she moved to England and what her life was like when she lived in London.

In Geography, we will be learning about how Cape Town is different to London. We will find out where Cape Town is, using an Atlas. We will learn about its physical and human features. Using this knowledge, we will then compare Cape Town to  what we have previously learnt about London.

Science

This term, we will continue to develop our understanding of Materials through our unit Shaping Up. We will explore changing the shape of different materials and how this can effect our choices of materials for different uses.

The unit terminates with an engaging investigation to find out which material would be best to use for a catapult.
